The CTO office develops the R&D roadmap for HVDC valve technologies, manages competencies, and supports projects with specialized technical support. Consulting Engineers provide high-level technical leadership, review design practices, lead complex technology improvements, and engage in quality reviews and cost optimization across domains. Job Description Consulting Engineers are highly sought after within GE Vernova to provide expertise on challenging problems and facilitate interfaces with adjacent technical domains. They lead major technical initiatives, advocate for technological advancement, chair design reviews, mentor engineers, and benchmark their technology domain. They define the need for new design practices, author and review design standards, document lessons learned, and deliver technical presentations to upper management and external parties. Key Responsibilities
Serve as a recognized technical authority in HVDC valves both internally and externally, and act as technical advisor to senior leadership levels Drive internal and external standardization, coordinate working groups, and represent GE Vernova in IEC/CIGRE and similar bodies Stay abreast of and communicate state-of-the-art HVDC valve technologies Gather external information to determine future market needs Collaborate with external parties to identify new requirements, products and solutions Develop and maintain a strategic HVDC valves technology roadmap Suggest areas for technological advancement and recommend programs to pursue Evaluate and champion innovative ideas Contribute to Intellectual Property management (patents, patent evaluation board, freedom to operate, mentoring in patenting) Oversee R&D programmes from conception to industrialisation, ensuring successful project delivery Chair and act as technical authority in technology and product development gate reviews Promote technology synergies across GE Vernova businesses (Power Conversion Systems, Grid Automation, Power Technology) Support commercial teams with technical business development and sales Support supply chain and procurement with technical expertise Lead/study project challenges in focused technical areas Lead/support development of technical proposals and collaborations with external funding bodies Support project tendering and delivery for new solutions Provide quality assistance and act as technical authority in root cause analysis Act as technical authority in competence management and training development Identify improvements in discipline knowledge or training needs Contribute to structured training plans and materials; deliver and mentor training Act as technical authority in competence assessments of senior and principal engineers Lead/support creation and presentation of conference papers and validate papers prepared by others Act as a knowledge ambassador, providing technical education to external universities Consult with and support the Chief Engineer’s Office to implement best practices and technologies
Qualifications/Requirements The position requires deep technical understanding of HVDC valve technologies, design processes, manufacturing and testing. The successful candidate will understand HVDC valve design options and how they translate to value propositions for GE Vernova’s customers, with a strong foundation in R&D and project engineering, and recognized domain expertise.
Masters degree or higher in a topic related to power electronic systems for high voltage applications Proven experience in power electronics with strong expertise in HVDC converter topologies and related trade-offs (topology selection, operating strategies, device selection, protection, gate drive, power supply designs, dielectric, mechanical, cooling design) Understanding of system design trade-offs between valve and other converter station components Experience with valve design studies Good overview of supply chain for main components and test equipment Familiarity with industrial processes for power electronics manufacturing, testing, commissioning and maintenance Awareness of future HVDC valve developments (higher currents, new semiconductors, new topologies) Involvement in pre-standardisation and standardisation initiatives (IEEE, IEC, CIGRE) Understanding of regulatory frameworks and standards for HVDC valves Experience with HVDC valve design tools (PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS) preferred Familiarity with patent evaluation and management Willingness to travel regularly
