Birchwell Associates are working with a leading organisation to appoint an experienced Data Centre Engineer for their Manchester facility. This hands-on role is based within a secure, high-availability environment and involves supporting clients across sectors including defence, finance, IT security, and engineering. The position is responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure, providing technical support, and ensuring reliable daily operations. As this is a client-facing role, strong communication and organisational skills are essential alongside technical capability. Key Responsibilities

Monitor and manage the data centre environment (both on-site and remotely), responding effectively to alerts and incidents.

Handle requests for change, support tickets, and incoming queries through the engineering service desk.

Install, configure, and maintain server racks, structured cabling, and related hardware.

Deliver remote hands support for client systems within agreed SLA timelines.

Manage cabling requirements, including cross-connects and client patching.

Support site logistics such as deliveries, stock management, and general operational tasks.

Carry out additional activities in line with data centre operations.

Candidate Profile

Previous experience in a data centre environment with good knowledge of infrastructure, cabling, and hardware installation.

Confident in client-facing situations: professional, clear, and approachable.

Highly organised, motivated, and keen to develop further technical expertise.

Awareness of compliance and accreditation frameworks.

Competent in IT applications, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.

Proven ability to deliver consistent, client-focused service.

Desirable Experience

Familiarity with data centre operations and administration.

Knowledge of structured cabling standards.

Experience using ticketing or service desk systems.

Basic understanding of networking (switching, routing) and server technologies.

Awareness of electrical power standards for IT environments.

Additional Information

Candidates must be able to obtain high-level security clearance.

Must live within 30 minutes of Manchester.

Participation in a 1-in-3 on-call rota will be required.

This is a site-based role with no remote working.
