About the Role

We are excited to introduce a brand‑new role: Database Engineer. This pivotal position will operate within our technology department, which plays an essential role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning and development of our databases and pipelines. You will be responsible for developing, optimising, and managing these databases and ensuring a high‑level of data quality and integrity. You will define the principles and processes that underpin data management while ensuring we maintain the highest standards for data security, privacy, and compliance. This role offers a dynamic environment where you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including software developers, data analysts, DevOps, and third‑party suppliers, to meet project requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database architecture, cloud infrastructure, and automation, with a proactive approach to problem‑solving and continuous improvement. Office location: Haydock, St Helens, with flexibility for hybrid working arrangements to promote work‑life balance and accommodate personal circumstances.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience with SQL and relational database management systems.
  • Azure platform experience or relevant certification is highly desirable.
  • Programming skills in Python, Ruby, R, or other modern languages.
  • Hands‑on experience operating and maintaining cloud infrastructure, particularly in a cloud environment such as Azure or AWS.
  • Knowledge of automation frameworks and scripting, including Unix shell scripting.
  • Understanding of database architecture, backup and recovery procedures, and performance tuning techniques.
  • Experience with database clustering, replication mechanisms, and high availability solutions.
  • Familiarity with Cloud SQL services and REST API development or integration.
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and version control tools.
  • Ability to contribute to system architecture and design, with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimise both relational and non‑relational databases across various environments.
  • Provision, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain database systems to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Automate database management processes to enhance scalability, repeatability, and efficiency.
  • Create and manage database schemas, tables, stored procedures, indexes, and triggers to support application requirements.
  • Implement high availability solutions such as clustering and replication to minimise downtime and ensure data resilience.
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines and ETL processes for real‑time and batch data ingestion, ensuring data integrity and consistency.
  • Monitor database performance metrics, proactively address issues, and perform tuning to optimise system performance.
  • Ensure compliance with data security, privacy, and regulatory standards, implementing necessary controls and audits.
  • Collaborate with third‑party vendors, software developers, data analysts, and other stakeholders to meet project deliverables and technical specifications.
  • Plan and execute database backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies to safeguard data assets.
  • Support database migrations and platform upgrades, ensuring minimal disruption to services.
  • Develop comprehensive documentation, including technical guides, procedures, and process workflows for internal teams and end‑users.
  • Engage with cross‑departmental teams on database‑related topics, integrations, and new feature implementation.
  • Assist internal customers and teams in understanding and adopting new database features and capabilities.
