The Design Engineer II manages the development and design of complex tools, fixtures and other devices used for production based on engineering specifications.
The Design Engineer II is expected to:
· Complete projects on time and on budget per customer specifications
· Create innovative designs and standards to reduce design time and costs
Tool Design Engineering 60%
· Supports the activities of assigned departmental Tool Makers in their efforts to develop and debug new and existing tooling designs in support of customer requirements.
· Determines tool specifications and requirements by interfacing with manufacturing staff to determine the best design for the tool.
· Determines the sequence of operation & number of die stations for progressive cutting, punching and forming to ensure products are produced economically and accurately.
· Performs calculations to determine exact dimensions, materials required and cost of the tools. Generates assembly & detail drawings of components required for the fabrication of inspection, assembly, custom automation, power press & four-slide tooling
· Resolves a wide variety of manufacturing problems including material characteristics tolerance and process issues, tolling failure issues and process variation issues
· Develops flat blank & strip layout drawings for stamping manufacturing process & analysis
· Selects standard MSC die components during design to allow efficient low cost concurrent tool mfg
· Designs automated machinery to perform various metal forming operations
· Designs tooling for a wide variety machine types to be used in the manufacturing environment.
Project Management 15%
· Assigns and tracks departmental resources needed to support customer-driven projects and new product engineering schedules.
· Monitors design engineering project work to ensure all customer requirements for quality, cost and lead time are met appropriately.
· Provides timely cost estimates to the Sales and Marketing Group ensuring that the total tooling cost needed to support the customer’s requirements are fully considered and supported
· Generates bill of material to identify all components of a design to facilitate manufacturing
· Coordinates ordering of tooling components to meet quoted cost & delivery
· Works with tooling group, process engineers and outside suppliers to effectively complete projects on time and on budget.
· Assists in facilitating the procurement of new equipment.
· Develops robust repeatable manufacturing processes that meets all the project requirements.
· Captures all process variables to assure a stable process in production.
· Assures all documentation is 100% accurate. Creates, develops and recommends improvements to the departments design process.
Process Improvement 25%
· Works with engineering to identify problems with performance or tool life and recommends solutions or enhancements.
· Implements systems that significantly reduces design time and improves accuracy of design output and meets expected deliveries and cost requirements
· Standardizes design processes company-wide, maintains updated design standards within the department, and trains departmental engineers on those standards
· Implement and execute continuous improvement techniques, as measured against delivery, cost and quality requirements
· Measure, Oversee and reduce the cost and time spent in tooling development (both in-house and outside at approved tooling vendors)
This position has no talent management responsibilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field is required.
· 4 - 7 years of experience in the maintenance, repair and construction of progressive and compound dies, tools, jigs and fixtures is required.
· Must have a thorough and complete knowledge of manufacturing processes understanding feeds, presses and other auxiliary equipment used in production
· Must have a thorough knowledge of machine tool construction and operations and the use of tools, machine shop practices, and the working qualities of materials.
