Overview Engineer - Mechanical Engineering at GE Vernova. Based in Stafford, part of the Mechanical Engineering team within the HVDC Valve Converter Engineering function. The role involves development and deployment of existing and new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly HVDC converters. The position may require some international travel to collaborate with other GE Vernova teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers and contract customers. Roles and Responsibilities
Mechanical development and analysis of power electronic converter valves for HVDC. Provide technical contributions to contract projects, NPI projects and tenders for HVDC related applications. Perform mechanical engineering calculations and simulations, with a focus on static and dynamic analysis. Apply specifications to components such as structural steel, composites, cooling systems, corona shields and insulators to capture and translate design intent to stakeholders. Support industrialisation, site works and commissioning. Create 3D CAD models and technical drawings; issue drawings and design documentation. Carry out validation and contribute to reporting of tests. Innovate new technical ideas for patent applications and integrate with other engineering departments for product development and project teams. Industrialise validated designs by interacting with stakeholders and ensure adherence to standards and legislation. Promote and adhere to EHS policies within the team; occasionally travel for product validations and supply chain integration & site support. Actively broaden and deepen HVDC knowledge and share expertise with engineers at any level.
The Person The candidate will typically have a degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, with a solid technical understanding of mechanical engineering. Relevant career experience in a mechanical engineering role is welcomed. The candidate should demonstrate innovative thinking, a desire to learn new skills, and the ability to apply engineering methods and share knowledge. Skills And Experience
Understanding of mechanical engineering principles such as stress analysis and calculations. Experience with 3D CAD tools. Aware of mechanical design to external standards (e.g. BSI, ISO, IEC, EN). Familiar with detail manufacturing drawings and drawing templates. Competent in specification and report writing (technical notes). Aware of EHS compliance in design and engineering. Strong problem-solving skills.
Advantageous
Aim to work towards professional registration. Experience in design of electrical transmission equipment or power electronics equipment. Experience in design for manufacture. Awareness of intellectual property and the patent process. Site experience of installation, commissioning and maintenance. Electrical experience or understanding of electrical principles. Experience in a manufacturing environment.
