BioDot is currently experiencing growth and we currently have an immediate need for a Field Service Engineer to work out of our UK Headquarters in Chichester.
The Field Service Engineer reports to the Field Service Supervisor and is responsible for robotic automation within a fast pace and highly automated biotech environment.
Responsibilities
- Carry out installation, training, configuration, and commissioning of BioDot equipment to meet customer specifications.
- Conduct acceptance testing and handover to customers.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and emergency repairs.
- Diagnose faults, replace components, and restore equipment to full functionality.
- Ensure accurate service records and documentation are maintained.
- Assist with mechanical and electrical inspection and troubleshooting of instrumentation (mechanical, electrical, software and liquid handling).
- Computer/software configuration and integration with auxiliaries, inspection cameras, etc.
- Exercise judgment within broadly defined practices in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criterion for obtaining results.
- Deliver technical training and guidance to customers on system operation, best practices, and maintenance.
- Provide remote technical support where possible to minimise downtime.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor, building strong customer relationships.
- Assume responsibility for continued customer satisfaction, and coordinate all activities with the customer and appropriate sales manager.
- Adhere to all company quality management system requirements.
- Always ensure compliance with relevant safety and environmental regulations.
- Willingness to travel extensively across the UK and Europe, with occasional international assignments.
- Support BioDot Sales efforts by selling service contracts, system upgrades, accessory items and spare parts.
- Assist in writing technical documents such as service manuals or application notes.
- Report activities, maintain local spare parts inventory, record travel expenses and timecards.
- Be accountable in maintaining an assigned tool kit which is issued as an asset and needs to be protected and managed by the FSE individually.
- Work as part of a cross-functional global support team which includes daily interaction with design engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, production personnel and sales team members.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Technical certification or military experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), or Biotechnology (BS) is preferred but not required.
- Minimum of Two to five years of experience with analytical instrumentation, laboratory automation, liquid handling systems, micro fluidics, electronics, mechanical engineering, or computers is highly desirable.
- Schematic interpretation and troubleshooting skills are a plus. Software integration and inspection camera integration are favorable.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to work autonomously at customer sites; customer-facing experience a plus.
- Ability to set priorities, manage multiple priority tasks and make technical decisions within time constraints.
- Excellent customer interaction skills, verbal and written communication.
- Computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Windows Explorer.
- HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline.
- Proven experience in field service engineering, ideally with automation, dispensing, or laboratory instrumentation.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills across mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-focused approach.
- Ability to work independently, manage own schedule, and prioritise tasks.
- Full UK driving licence and valid passport.
- Experience in diagnostics, life sciences, or medical device manufacturing equipment.
- Knowledge of PLCs, motion control, and automation software.
