Job Description:
The (Geospatial Technology Engineer) Geodesist, within the Geospatial team, is accountable for providing technical geodesy services and subject matter expertise across the organisation. This role is responsible for managing bps geodetic system of record and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of geospatial data. The Geodesist addresses complex geodesy, earth geometry, and coordinate integrity challenges that require specialised knowledge.
Key responsibilities include managing bps geodetic system of record, deriving and implementing new geodetic objects, developing specialised applications and maintaining geodetic integrity across critical operations. The Geodesist collaborates closely with Geospatial colleagues, as well as specialists in the business to deliver integrated solutions. Beyond technical expertise, the Geodesist is a champion of best practices, driving innovation in geodetic technologies and sharing knowledge to strengthen geodesy-related capabilities within the organisation.
This role is ideal for a candidate with exceptional attention to accuracy and precision, a deep understanding of geospatial data and its applications and a commitment to technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and continuously improve the bp CRS Catalogue and associated system of record/platform, including executing and reviewing geodetic object change requests, maintaining auditable records and serving the catalogue to required applications and systems.
Efficiently derive and implement new geodetic objects including custom CRS and transformations to facilitate data loading and accurate data acquisition, including collaborating with vendors, partners and government agencies where required.
Serve as a technical expert on geodesy and earth geometry across the organisation by responding to support requests and proactively finding opportunities for oversight. Ensure geodetic and geospatial integrity in data and operations by investigating and determining accurate geodetic parameters for datasets with unknown or uncertain attributes.
Hold decision-making authority for go/no-go determinations regarding geodetic integrity within the Geoscience computing portfolio, particularly when changes or upgrades are proposed.
Develop and contribute to Geospatial and other Technology source code where coordinate operations are being undertaken, ensuring geodetic integrity is maintained and adequate testing is executed.
Design and implement geodetic APIs that reference data from the system of record, emphasizing modularity, scalability, and automation.
Perform specialised quality control and verification of positioning and location data across geospatial and remote sensing vector and raster datasets, as well as seismic, wells, gravitational, and other geoscience data.
Implement, and contribute to the sustainment of, bp practices and specific procedures for geospatial data management, as well as general standards for Geospatial data quality and metadata.
Deploy and contribute to accurate and reliable Geospatial Data Science techniques to extract reliable business insights from Geospatial data. Proactively seek opportunities to enhance data insights, streamline workflows, and automate processes to improve efficiency
Assist in Geospatial activities, providing input to ETL, analysis, and visualisation workflows for a wide variety of use cases and data types on SDE and services within Enterprise Portals, adhering to established procedures for data management.
Continuously challenge conventional approaches, solve problems creatively, and drive innovation. Develop innovative solutions to improve geodetic processes, workflows, best practices, and service delivery. Pilot and implement new technology and techniques to enhance data quality and service outcomes.
Develop and deliver training sessions and knowledge-sharing workshops for users and collaborators, focusing on geodetic principles, tools, and data.
Preferred Accreditations:
Masters in Geodesy, Engineering Surveying, Geospatial Sciences, GIS, Earth Geometry or other associated subject
RICS or CICES chartership
Professional membership of RGS, RIN, IAG or BCS
