Summary
The NCC is a not-for-profit organisation supporting manufacturing innovation across 16 sectors in the UK. We’re looking for an Infrastructure Engineering specialist to join our expanding IT department as a hands-on, delivery-oriented professional providing guidance and support around IT infrastructure. You’ll work in a small, skilled team as our leading Infrastructure specialist, delivering advice and hands-on implementation on a range of projects and BAU work. Primarily working on IT projects and programmes across the IT Defence Portfolio, you’ll take responsibility for the installation and/or decommissioning of products and services in both hybrid and on-premises environments, combining traditional virtualised infrastructure with cloud-based services.
Location and working pattern: Bristol based with hybrid working (3-4 days per week in office).

Security clearance: Government Security Clearance required to the nature of our business; all employment is subject to satisfactory references and a level of government security clearance.

What you’ll be doing (Responsibilities)
- Working from established low-level designs, implementing secure, resilient, and supportable infrastructure components that align with architectural standards and project timelines.
- Builds and configures on-premises infrastructure.
- Deploys and integrates cloud-based services (e.g. IaaS/PaaS/SaaS, virtual machines, storage, networking, identity).
- Ensures systems are built in line with approved high-level and low-level designs.
- Collaborates with solution architects, programme and project managers, and cyber security engineers. Supports risk management with associated stakeholders.
- Plans, estimates and schedules installation and decommissioning work.
- Maintains the highest levels of IT security to protect NCC data.
- Uses diagnostic tools, manuals, test scripts and documentation to identify, diagnose and report system errors during project delivery.
- Supports test planning by designing and producing test scripts and cases based on functional and non-functional specifications.
- Provides specialist advice and assistance on installation planning and execution.
- Maintains flexibility to work from any NCC location and provide some out-of-hours support as required by the project.
Qualifications and experience we look for
- Willingness and eligibility to undertake government security clearances.
- Proven experience in a senior or independent Infrastructure Engineer role, supporting similar activities as described.
- Familiarity with security best practices across Microsoft environments.
- Understanding of network security principles, including firewalls, segmentation, and secure remote access.
- Knowledge of identity and access management (IAM), including MFA, RBAC, and conditional access policies.
- Experience aligning infrastructure builds with cyber security standards (e.g. NCSC guidance, CIS benchmarks, Microsoft Security Baselines).
- Awareness of regulatory and compliance frameworks (e.g. ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus).
- Understanding of data classification, encryption standards (at rest and in transit), and secure storage/access principles.
- Experience supporting and configuring enterprise server platforms.
- Familiarity with virtualization technologies used in production environments.
- Exposure to public cloud platforms and integration with on-premises systems.
- General knowledge of core networking components and protocols.
- Understanding of security practices within infrastructure delivery.
- Experience with systems management and configuration processes.
- Experience using scripting to automate infrastructure tasks, including Infrastructure-as-Code concepts.
- Awareness of telephony systems.
