Our mission is to be both the Technology Partner and Employer of Choice for the UK General Insurance market, with a commitment to an inclusive, positive and collaborative culture.Position: Lead Software EngineerThis role provides a pathway to mentoring other engineers and developing your own technical leadership within a cross-functional scrum team.ResponsibilitiesDesign, plan and deliver features and improvements to production, taking a lead role where appropriate.Collaborate with Architects, Principal Software Engineers, and Technical Leads to evaluate trade-offs, shape system architecture, and drive design decisions.Document architecture decisions and contribute to architectural governance by advising on proposed designs.Coach and mentor squads' software engineers; contribute to building a high-performance team culture.Support platforms and services in production; respond to incidents and fix issues; work toward improved customer outcomes.Ensure changes align with technical goals and participate in hands-on delivery as part of a cross-functional Scrum team.Contribute to continual improvements in Agile software development practices.Collaborate with Business Analysts, Developers and QAs to establish requirements and resolve live operational issues.Experience & QualificationsProven experience as a Java developer/software engineer.Experience building and running enterprise-scale web applications in production.Experience leading development of systems and/or major new features in Java.Deep understanding of Java and SQL; strong problem-solving and analysis skills; ability to diagnose performance issues.Strong knowledge of software design patterns and their pragmatic application for maintainability, scalability, and architectural consistency.Experience working with legacy codebases, with a focus on refactoring and modernization to improve performance and long-term maintainability.Excellent communication skills; ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.Experience designing, developing, and integrating SOAP and RESTful web services.Understanding of secure coding practices and risk mitigation.Proven leadership in guiding development teams, mentoring engineers, and fostering technical excellence.AptitudesBalance technical excellence with pragmatic delivery and align architectural decisions with product vision and customer value.Proactive, self-motivated, and accountable; able to drive tasks to completion with minimal supervision.Structured thinking, ability to diagnose issues and design solutions; quick to learn new technologies.Ability to deliver high-quality work with attention to detail; contribute to innovation and process improvements.Effective communication with both technical and non-technical audiences; supportive of mentoring and knowledge sharing.Participates actively in team ceremonies and fosters a positive team culture.Other InformationMission and ValuesOur values are Accountability, Innovation, Teamwork, and Trust.
