Overview
Lead Backend Developer – Join a High-Growth Startup Tackling a Complex Problem. A profitable, bootstrapped LegalTech founded in 2022, working to make leasehold homeownership fair for everyone, is looking for an Engineer to innovate their whole system environment.
As Lead Backend Developer, you will join a small, collaborative team, work closely with the founding team, including a technical founder, and help take the current MVP to the next level. The task is to design and build a robust, scalable backend platform that underpins rapid growth, supports seamless integrations, and powers an excellent customer experience.
This is a role with significant responsibility and autonomy. The company is addressing a real-world problem with tangible social value, and improvements to the platform save customers stress, time, and money.
Responsibilities
Refactor and Scale: Turn the existing MVP into clean, maintainable, scalable systems. Architect infrastructure that grows with the business, while improving performance and reliability.
Applied AI: Use AI and ML pragmatically to deliver real value for users (e.g., improving document analysis tools, enhancing development workflows with AI-assisted coding).
API Architecture: Design and build robust APIs for future integrations and external endpoints. Shape a modern architecture based on PostgreSQL while moving away from low-code solutions.
System Reliability: Ensure backend is resilient, stable, and dependable to enable the team to ship improvements confidently.
Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with sales, legal, and other functions to deliver technical solutions that meet real user needs.
Qualifications
The company is looking for strong backend experience, ideally in Python, with a track record of building production-ready systems containing complex business logic. Familiarity with relational data modeling and PostgreSQL is key. Experience making architectural decisions in growing environments is important. Some comfort with basic frontend tasks (HTML, CSS, jQuery) will be helpful as the work is primarily backend (90%).
Leadership ability is crucial. The hire will set technical standards, guide future developers, and translate architectural decisions into clear trade-offs while keeping the end-user in mind.
