Opportunity

Stantec is involved in many of the world’s largest, complex hydro projects. We are growing and seek a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team, working on the design and development of cutting-edge hydropower and pumped storage hydro solutions. Projects include Coire Glas (Scotland), Koysha (Ethiopia), and Dinorwig (Wales). We are a leading, forward-thinking consultancy focused on delivering high-quality outputs to meet client outcomes and business benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the mechanical engineering elements of solutions and the production of outline and detailed designs to support successful project delivery.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary design group and client to undertake technical audits, risk evaluations, and develop mechanical design at feasibility, outline and detailed stages.
  • Develop cost-effective, innovative design solutions in alignment with client requirements.
  • Work within the hydropower team and support projects across other sectors including Water and Thermal.
  • Engage with other technical disciplines to produce timely and cost-effective solutions.

About You / Qualifications

  • Chartered or Incorporated status with IMechE is preferred or working towards.
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Experience in design and specification of mechanical systems in an industrial context.
  • Experience with rotating machinery.
  • Knowledge of planning, specification, design, procurement and commissioning of mechanical equipment for energy sector projects.
  • Competent user of 3D modelling software (e.g., Revit or AutoCAD); experience in a BIM environment and hydropower applications is desirable.
  • Experience with pump and large-bore valve specification and selection; familiarity with balance of plant systems typically found in hydropower (HVAC, cooling water, oil recovery, hydraulic control systems, governors, fire suppression, mechanical services) is a plus.
