Mechanical Engineer (Senior, Principal, Senior Principal or Experienced) - Hydropower

Stantec is working on many of the world’s largest, complex and most exciting dams and hydro projects. We are rapidly growing and seek a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team, working on the design and development of cutting-edge hydropower and pumped storage hydro solutions. Projects include Coire Glas in Scotland, Koysha in Ethiopia, and Dinorwig in Wales.

Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for the mechanical engineering elements of solutions and the production of associated outline and detailed designs to support the successful delivery of projects. Roles are based within the hydropower team at Stantec but may involve support for projects in other sectors including Water and Thermal projects.

In your role you will work closely with the Client as part of a multi-disciplinary design group to undertake technical audits, risk evaluations, develop mechanical design and liaise with other technical disciplines at feasibility, outline and detailed stages to produce solutions in a timely and cost-effective manner. You will develop cost-effective solutions and adopt innovative design solutions in accordance with the Client’s requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to mechanical engineering elements of solutions and production of outline and detailed designs to support project delivery.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplined design group to undertake technical audits and risk evaluations.
  • Develop mechanical design and liaise with other technical disciplines at feasibility, outline and detailed stages.
  • Produce timely and cost-effective solutions in line with Client requirements, and adopt innovative design approaches as appropriate.
  • Support projects in the hydropower sector and, where required, in other Stantec sectors including Water and Thermal projects.

About You

  • Chartered or Incorporated status with the IMechE is preferred or currently working towards.
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Experience in design and specification of mechanical systems in an industrial context.
  • Experience with rotating machinery.
  • Knowledge and skills in planning, specification, design, procurement and commissioning of mechanical equipment for energy sector projects.
  • Ideally, competent user of 3D modelling software (e.g., Revit or AutoCAD), experience in BIM environments, and experience of hydropower applications. Experience with pump and large-bore valve specification and selection. May also have experience with balance of plant and other systems typical in hydropower applications (e.g., HVAC, cooling water, oil recovery, hydraulic control systems, governors, fire suppression, mechanical services).
