Mechanical Project Engineer - (Water Treatment Projects) at Glanua. We work with municipal and industrial clients including Uisce Éireann (formerly Irish Water), Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, United Utilities and Affinity Water.
We are passionate about solving today’s environmental challenges and delivering a decarbonised and sustainable world. The role is primarily based in the UU region, with occasional travel to projects for our other regulated water clients in the UK.
The Role
As a Mechanical Project Engineer, you will deliver innovative and technically challenging mechanical engineering solutions for a diverse portfolio of MEICA (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control, and Automation) and Civil works. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement mechanical systems for municipal water and wastewater projects. The role demands strong technical expertise, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to manage mechanical aspects of projects from design through to completion.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Work as part of a team in the delivery of one or more projects at any one time, embracing the ethos of a “one team” culture.
- Mechanical Design Leadership - Take a leading role in the mechanical design and sub-contract package delivery for water and wastewater treatment projects. Oversee all stages of mechanical design and delivery, including site surveys, detailed design, tender pricing and subcontract appointments.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration - Work closely with civil, process, electrical, ICA, and H&S teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems into the overall project. Provide technical guidance and coordination with internal and external design and project delivery teams.
- Procurement and Equipment Selection - Manage the selection and procurement of mechanical equipment (e.g., pumps, valves, tanks, pipework) and materials, ensuring compliance with company policies, industry regulations, and project specifications.
- Subcontractor Management - Coordinate and manage subcontractors to ensure that their mechanical work aligns with project objectives, timelines, and quality standards. Ensure subcontractors meet contractual requirements and deliverables.
- Site Monitoring and Progress Reviews - Conduct regular site visits to monitor the progress of mechanical work, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure safety and compliance with established standards.
- Client and Stakeholder Engagement - Build and maintain strong client relationships from project commencement through to close-out. Provide technical support, updates, and advice throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring client objectives and deadlines are met.
- Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance - Ensure the consistent implementation of health, safety, quality, and environmental procedures in line with Glanua and client-defined standards. Address any performance, scope, cost, or schedule issues proactively.
- Project Reporting and Documentation - Prepare detailed project plans, reports, and status updates for clients and internal stakeholders. Highlight key milestones, risks, and mitigation strategies to keep all parties informed.
- Continuous Improvement - Participate in project review meetings and incorporate lessons learned into future projects. Contribute to process improvements across the company, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of mechanical project delivery.
- Team Development - Foster a collaborative team environment and contribute to a positive and supportive culture. Mentor junior engineers and encourage a focus on continuous personal and professional development.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) is preferred.
- At least 3 years of proven experience as a Project Engineer or Senior Project Engineer in the water and wastewater industry. Strong commercial acumen and the ability to manage project budgets, timelines, and resources effectively.
- Ability to collaborate with multiple disciplines (civil, electrical, process, etc.) and provide technical and commercial guidance in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Strong knowledge of WIMES together with analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of resolving technical issues and managing project changes on-site.
- In-depth knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards in mechanical design and construction, particularly in water and wastewater sectors.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and MS Project is highly desirable.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with clients, subcontractors, and team members.
- Ability to engage with clients and stakeholders effectively, ensuring their needs are met throughout the project lifecycle.
- Full UK Driving License
