Principal Civil & Structural Engineer - Nuclear
Vulcain Engineering is seeking a Principal Civil & Structural Engineer to manage the technical oversight of large nuclear infrastructure projects in the UK. You will provide expert advice on complex civil and structural designs, engage with regulators, and ensure compliance with nuclear safety standards.
About Vulcain Engineering
Vulcain Engineering, an international engineering consultancy, supports global industrial leaders in their transition to a more responsible and sustainable future. We support our customers in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of their complex infrastructure projects that will shape the world of tomorrow. With operations in 17 countries and employing over 6,000 staff worldwide, our business responds to the needs of our clients by delivering high-value engineering expertise tailored to our clients’ most complex challenges. In the UK, we focus on the Nuclear sector, contributing to ground breaking projects, such as Hinkley Point C (HPC).
The Position
As we expand our technical teams, we have a new opportunity for a Principal Civil & Structural Engineer to manage the technical oversight of large nuclear infrastructure projects. Joining us as a recognised expert in the field, you will provide expert advice to senior project stakeholders, engage directly with regulators and ensure all civil & structural designs meet the highest standards of compliance and nuclear safety.
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical delivery of nuclear projects across large-scale civil & structural designs, including structural steel and reinforced concrete.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies to support approvals and oversight.
- Ensure projects meet required compliance and nuclear safety requirements and that deliverables are achieved.
- Act as a point of reference for design validation, supporting decision-making on complex engineering solutions.
- Be the technical expert in your field, whilst leveraging the support of a collaborative and highly skilled team of engineers.
- Providing advice and influence to senior stakeholders on important and classified civil & structural topics.
This is a unique opportunity to directly influence the civil & structural scopes for landmark nuclear projects, helping to shape infrastructure that will define the UK’s energy future.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in the design of large-scale structures - structural steel and reinforced concrete.
- Demonstrated ability to manage technical scopes through technical/project leadership.
- Comfortable liaising with senior project stakeholders and regulatory bodies, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Fluency in English and the permanent right to work in the UK, alongside UK project experience.
- Working towards or already Chartered (ICE or IStructE).
- Strong technical expertise across the assessment, inspection and review of structural steel and reinforced concrete designs in line with Eurocodes standards (or equivalent).
- Understanding of seismic design and CDM regulations is advantageous.
- Reside locally to Bristol or Glasgow, or be prepared to relocate (note: this permanent role does not include travel expense coverage).
Eligibility and Visas
Please note that visa sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on role criticality and project needs. Many UK projects require high-level security clearance, meaning we can often only consider candidates with an existing, indefinite right to work in the UK. Exceptionally, we may consider visa sponsorship for applicants with niche experience aligned to core work (e.g. EPR/nuclear new build).
Benefits
- 25 days annual leave + bank holidays, with the ability to swap bank holidays for cultural or religious celebrations.
- Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption and neonatal care leave.
- Employee referral scheme.
- Private medical and dental insurance.
- Electric vehicle scheme.
- Cycle to work scheme.
- Training and development, including additional qualifications and accreditations relevant to your role.
- Travel insurance for business and personal travel.
- Employee assistance programme.
