AtkinsRéalis, Balfour Beatty and Egis Road Operations UK are part of a consortium creating Connect Plus Services, delivering highways asset care from finance through design, build, maintenance and day-to-day operation. As part of our 30-year remit to manage and improve the capital’s orbital motorway network, we deliver major projects such as widening 38 miles of the M25, refurbishing tunnels and bridges, and installing variable messaging signs and gantries to maximise network reliability.
Your Purpose
Providing expert technical support to the design team (principally Structures, with involvement in Highways, Ancillaries and Improvements) to enable cost-effective, buildable design and solutions that maintain or improve the M25 highway asset to agreed standards and stakeholder needs.
Deliver outcomes to programme and budget, and meet CPS quality standards. Review documentation from internal and external designers and assist in communication between design, asset and project management teams and other organisations (NH SES).
What You Can Bring
Essential qualifications, skills and experience include:
- Relevant vocational qualifications (MEng/MSc/BEng/BSc/HNC/HND).
- Registration with the Engineering Council to CEng level and membership of ICE, IStructE or IHT.
- 40 hours of CPD in the last 12 months, including 20 related to highway engineering.
- Competence in Highway Structural Design and Assessment.
- Knowledge of CDM and related health and safety legislation and processes.
- Competence in exercising the Designer’s duties and the Principal Designer duties under CDM.
- Broad understanding of environmental requirements of highway schemes.
- Broad knowledge of Quality Management and IMS.
- Proficiency in computer-aided design applications and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of design and assessment standards (DMRB/MCHW/Eurocodes) relevant to structures.
- Knowledge of National Highways approvals procedures and structural design analysis.
- Awareness of multiple highway disciplines (Pavements, Barriers, Drainage).
Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical leadership and mentoring within civil engineering and support liaison with National Highways (SES) and internal teams.
- Check, review and approve design briefs, instructions, contract documentation, design deliverables and technical reports for completeness and compliance.
- Fulfill delegated signatory responsibilities for certification.
- Advise on the Design Review Process (Certification) and ensure designs meet DBFO contract and CPS standards.
- Lead innovation and continual improvement in design and construction delivery.
- Support development of in-house design capability and process improvement, and capture learnings across the business.
- Deputise for the Engineering Manager and Portfolio Leads as required.
- Uphold the Connect Plus Services values and a relentless focus on Zero Harm, Safety by Design, and CDM duties.
- Support delivery of sustainability activities.
- Attend relevant community forums to represent the Engineering Design team.
