Principal Electrical Engineer

New Yesterday

Overview

Hoare Lea is a human-centric and planet-conscious engineering consultancy. We offer intelligent and sustainable solutions to complex design challenges for the built environment throughout the UK and further afield.

Role: Principal Electrical Engineer
Department: Operational Assets
Location: Manchester

About the Role

We have a brand-new opportunity for a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our Operational Assets team based in our Manchester office. We are seeking someone who is passionate about existing buildings, enjoys designing unique and pragmatic solutions to operational and performance issues, and is interested in using real-time data to drive towards a net zero future. You will join a newly formed team that merges expertise from property consultancy, design engineering and data-led building performance to provide a rounded service to clients, creating value through building lifecycles.

We embed ourselves within a client team and their assets, setting the roadmap to a more sustainable future and guiding projects from concept to implementation and operation. Our services cover residential, commercial and healthcare sectors, and we collaborate with a range of specialists to deliver high-quality outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Secure new projects and service both existing and new clients while supporting the regional lead in planning the specialist delivery of the Operational Assets group.
  • Focus on work delivery, organisational support and team growth to support local and regional clients.
  • Provide leadership, supervision and guidance to team members and other staff.
  • Collaborate with other teams to deliver a variety of projects; participate in workload planning discussions.
  • Recruit, train and develop team members to ensure ongoing succession and growth of the Practice.
  • Carry out design, specification and site monitoring duties; monitor commissioning and post-occupancy activities.
  • Prepare technical reports such as feasibility studies, issue investigations and condition surveys.
  • Engage with clients (commercial and project management awareness).

What You’ll Be Doing

You will work on a varied portfolio of frameworks and UK-based projects with some overseas opportunities. You will lead small projects up to a few million pounds and provide technical support to end users, landlords, management agents and project managers. The three key service areas in Operational Assets are:

  • Decarbonisation, performance improvements and energy reduction – delivering projects that reduce energy use and improve occupant performance, from roadmaps to implementation.
  • Design – specialising in challenging existing buildings across all RIBA stages, delivering creative, sustainable design strategies.
  • Property consultancy – providing governance and advisory services such as technical due diligence, dilapidations surveys, maintenance reports, asset registers, troubleshooting, energy optimisation surveys and EPCs.

Projects span Commercial Offices, Retail, Residential, Education, Healthcare, MoJ, Defence, Heritage, Industrial and Technology sectors.

About You

To be successful in this role you’ll need:

  • Qualified design engineer (chartered status or working towards).
  • Experience working on projects in existing buildings (refurbishment and fit-out).
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills.
  • Strong knowledge of data and metering.
  • Experience with performance specification, detailed design work, contract administration and site duties.
  • Experience in Building Services (all-rounder).
  • Willingness and strong technical knowledge in primary engineering discipline with good understanding of secondary disciplines.
  • Familiarity with UK and applicable EU regulations, design guides, etc.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills to meet timescales and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with ability to develop effective relationships.
  • Proven track record in work winning and building successful teams.
