Overview

We are hiring a Principal Engineer to join the new team working on initiatives and projects which will use the Our Future Health resource to provide personalised, actionable health insights to participants and enable a large increase in the UK’s ability to run clinical trials as part of the government’s 10-year NHS plan. This role will be pivotal in delivering key technologies that impact participant health on a national scale.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical direction and expertise to design, architect, integrate, operate, and govern internal and third-party digital health technologies.
  • Lead technology oversight, architecture, product development, and clinical software delivery at scale, processing sensitive health data, sharing health insights, enabling third-party research studies, and building participant engagement.
  • Help define regulatory strategy, contribute to medical risk management, ensure standards compliance, and establish procedures with a focus on Information Security, Health Information, and Medical Device standards.
  • Engage with regulatory specialists to understand applicable standards and ensure compliance.
  • Support initiatives to meet targets for clinical trial recruitment, returning health insights to participants, and developing necessary regulated software where applicable.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of digital health applications, clinical trials, genomics, and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading the technical design, development, and delivery of precision medicine/personalised health software products or devices.
  • Knowledge and experience of large-scale processing and management of sensitive health data, focused on healthcare delivery and clinical trials.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred, AWS or GCP acceptable).
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred).
  • Strong data modelling skills; in-depth knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and familiarity with other data stores (blob, document, graph).
  • Experience in technical leadership within agile teams, promoting practices such as code review, TDD, CI/CD, and pairing using Git/GitHub.
  • Experience operating software components post-launch (observability, logging, metrics, error reporting, debugging, and incident management).
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams with engineers, product, UX, and non-technical stakeholders; ability to lead multiple cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to facilitate complex technical discussions with organization-wide impact and provide clear direction.
  • Proven ability to communicate with stakeholders at various levels, including executive audiences (CTO, CPO, etc.).
  • Experience developing Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) in compliance with UK MDR 2002 and applicable international standards (ISO 14971, ISO 13485, IEC 62304, IEC 62366, etc.).
  • Experience producing and maintaining software lifecycle documentation required under IEC 62304 (software development plans, architecture and design specs, test protocols/reports, traceability matrices, etc.).
  • Experience with quality management systems (ISO 13485), including internal audits, CAPA processes, and ensuring software lifecycle documentation is inspection-ready for regulatory review.
  • Strong understanding of risk management per ISO 14971 and usability engineering per IEC 62366.
  • Familiarity with clinical safety and health software standards relevant in the UK (e.g., DCB0129/0160) and regulatory expectations for safe deployment of clinical software.
  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions (Technical Files, Design Dossiers, or equivalent) and responding to regulator queries on software documentation.
  • Experience working in small, growing organisations with ambiguity where flexibility is valued.
  • Expert understanding of software quality and experience leading quality improvement across cross-functional teams.
  • Track record of mentoring both senior and early-career engineers.
