Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated Quality Engineer I to support our growing quality assurance team to support the development of innovative, high-performance outdoor equipment, including tents, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, backpacks, and camp furniture. This position plays a critical role in ensuring new products meet rigorous quality, safety, and performance standards from concept through production launch to after-market. The ideal candidate will work cross-functionally with engineering, product development, suppliers, and manufacturing teams to proactively identify risks and drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with design and development teams to define product quality and reliability requirements.
Assist in the creation, implementation, and maintenance of quality plans and product inspection criteria during the product development lifecycle.
Support DFx activities, such as, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Quality (DFQ), and Design for Repair (DFR)
Facilitate Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) sessions with product team (design) and suppliers (process) to minimize risk in product development and manufacturing.
Perform laboratory testing on raw materials, components, and finished goods to validate performance, reliability and conformance to specifications.
Conduct first article inspections and review supplier-provided data to ensure components conform to specifications.
Track and analyze data from lab and field testing to identify failure trends and other product improvement opportunities.
Assist with root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) related to design or early production quality issues.
Help monitor and audit supplier quality performance during pilot runs and initial mass production.
Ability to travel to suppliers (domestic and international) for product and supplier reviews, inspection, and auditing activities. Expected travel approximately 10-20%.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
Experience:
2–5 years of experience in a quality or engineering role.
Experience in cut & sew products or recreational hard goods are a plus
ASQ certifications of CQE and CQA are a plus
Skills:
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
Basic understanding of mechanical drawings, tolerances, and manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, textiles, metal fabrication).
Familiarity with ISO 9001 or similar quality management systems is beneficial.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic data analysis; experience with statistical tools or CAD is a plus.
Passion for outdoor gear and understanding of end-user performance expectations is highly desirable.
