Job Description
Are you ready to play a key role in the future of UK payments? As a Lead SWIFT Engineer, you'll be part of the team responsible for supporting and evolving the Bank's Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system - a critical part of the UK's financial infrastructure! You'll lead on delivery, support, maintenance and operation of the SWIFT AMH/FMG components for the RTGS solution, working in a collaborative, agile environment.
Flexible Working Options
This role is open to flexible working patterns, these may include:
- Flexible start and end time to each day
- Ability to adapt calendar as needed, this could be to fit in the school run, gym, or appointments
- A 50% in-office attendance requirement can be spread across the month to accommodate diverse working patterns, such as the flexibility to purchase a weekly train ticket for certain weeks
- Compressed hours (subject to approval and policy within the team)
- Working from abroad policy (subject to approval and policy within the team)
A Day in the Role:
You will be working as part of a support rota that provides cover for the operational hours of the RTGS solution, standby emergency cover and occasional weekend working for major releases that cannot be accommodated in the normal working hours.
As the main point of escalation for service issues, you'll be ready to address any technical challenges that arise. You'll lead the team in delivering new features across the RTGS solution, with a focus on SWIFT applications, ensuring high-quality software components and documentation are produced.
You'll run agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives, while also maintaining the tools and methodologies that keep the team working efficiently. Throughout the day, you'll monitor the Bank's live and UAT financial messaging systems, proactively resolving issues and ensuring performance is maintained.
If a major incident occurs, you'll take the lead in handling it, applying your analytical skills to resolve it quickly and effectively. You'll also coach and mentor junior engineers, helping them grow their skills and confidence. Occasionally, you'll provide out-of-hours support, including Bank Holidays, to ensure the RTGS system remains resilient and secure.

Role Requirements:
The successful candidate should have extensive demonstrable experience of configuring and supporting SWIFT products.
Minimum Criteria
We're looking for someone who has the following key skills and experience:
- Demonstrable experience configuring and supporting SWIFT products, including:
- Alliance Connect
- Alliance Gateway
- Alliance Web Platform
- Alliance Messaging Hub
- Transaction Delivery Agent
- HSM
- Experience providing technical support and troubleshooting in a live operational environment
- Solid understanding of ISO 20022 messaging and end-to-end business flows
- Demonstrable experience leading teams to deliver features across technical solutions, focused on SWIFT applications
Essential Criteria
We are interested in hearing from candidates who have the following capabilities:
- Ability to lead technical delivery and agile ceremonies (e.g. sprint planning, retrospectives)
- Experience managing and resolving major IT incidents
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills, including the ability to translate requirements into a low-level technical design
- Experience coaching and mentoring junior engineers
- Experience delivering high-quality software and documentation
- Commitment to adhering to security and operational standards

Additional consideration will be given to candidates that can demonstrate:
- Experience with both Windows and Linux platforms
- Experience with Automation deployment using Ansible
- Experience with Automated testing

Salary and Benefits Information
We encourage flexible working, part time working and job share arrangements. Part time salary and benefits will be on a pro-rated basis as appropriate.
In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:
- Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year. The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time.
- A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
- An 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits.
- 26 days' annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits.
- Private medical insurance and income protection.
National Security Vetting Process
Employment in this role will be subject to the National Security Vetting clearance process (and typically can take between 6 to 12 weeks post offer) and the passing of additional Bank security checks in accordance with the Bank policy.
