At Thorntons Law, technology isn’t just a support function—it’s a strategic enabler of everything we do. As our Security Engineer, you will be central to protecting our firm’s integrity, data, and digital future. You’ll take ownership of key security initiatives, implement innovation, and ensure our systems are resilient while working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. This is your moment to be part of a different kind of law firm that prioritises relationships, client service, and continuous improvement. What you’ll need
Proven experience designing, implementing and managing cloud-based security solutions (especially Azure & M365 environments). A deep understanding of security best practices: identity & access management, endpoint protection, conditional access, zero trust principles, threat detection & response. Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills; ability to think quickly under pressure, resolve complex incidents, and anticipate issues before they escalate. Clear communication: translating technical risk into business impact, collaborating with non-technical stakeholders, and promoting best practices. Solid qualifications: a degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related; professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or Azure Security are desirable. Bonus skills: experience with Microsoft Sentinel, SOC operations / incident response; knowledge of regulatory, compliance or risk frameworks; scripting or automation experience (PowerShell, Python, etc.). Energy, curiosity, and a real sense of ownership. Responsibilities
Security Infrastructure & Roadmap – designing and implementing security architecture across our estate, including Azure, M365, Conditional Access, and broader cloud environments, while defining and driving a roadmap that ensures scalability, reliability, and compliance. Monitoring & Optimisation – leading efforts to protect our network infrastructure and systems; working with our SOC service to detect, investigate and respond to incidents; managing Microsoft Sentinel; and proactively enhancing resilience through new security features. Policy & Reporting – partnering with the senior IT team to develop and maintain security policies, keeping clear documentation of configurations and changes, and reporting to senior leadership on threat trends, risks, and overall security posture. Training & Awareness – building security awareness across the firm by designing and delivering training for staff, guiding IT colleagues on best practices, and promoting a culture of vigilance and continuous improvement. Collaboration & Influence – working closely across IT, risk & compliance, and business units; coordinating with vendors and consultants; mentoring junior colleagues; and contributing to strategic decisions that shape the firm’s security future. Why this role
