About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to be the founding engineer of a brand new AI product team at Pleo. The successful candidate will shape the technical direction to build an exciting new product, with the support of fellow engineers to collaborate with. Pleo has over 40,000 customers and a decade of unique spend data - an incredible foundation to build upon.

The primary focus of this role will be on building and shipping a new AI product from 0 to 1, with core responsibilities centered on product architecture and model deployment, with a strong collaborative element for infrastructure. You will work directly embedded in the newly founded Spend Intelligence team alongside a Product Manager, Product Designer, and other engineers and data colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and build products from scratch, owning the end-to-end development of AI-powered features.
  • Discover and define opportunities, proactively engaging with teams across Pleo to uncover their most critical challenges and find the highest-impact opportunities for AI to solve them.
  • Design the operational stack, making key technical decisions and building the infrastructure needed to power AI features.
  • Develop and deploy a range of ML models, productionising models to solve key customer problems.
  • Integrate a portfolio of LLMs and APIs, connecting the product to a diverse set of models and external tools to create powerful, automated systems.
  • Collaborate with Platform teams, working closely with the data platform team to input into MLOps infrastructure and with Engineering counterparts.
  • Partner to prove value, working in a tight, collaborative loop with the Product Manager, Data Engineers, Data Scientists, and Analysts to deliver results.

Tech Stack

  • Pleo works with both AWS and GCP, as well as Kubernetes, due to its hybrid infrastructure.
  • The data warehouse is currently in BigQuery, serving dbt and Looker, where Python and SQL are used alongside Airflow for orchestration and Kafka for event-driven processing.
  • The product is built in Kotlin, Java, Node.js, while leveraging PostgreSQL and MySQL.

Requirements

  • A true '0-to-1' AI builder with proven experience taking a product from concept to production system.
  • Energized by greenfield projects and comfortable with the ambiguity that comes with them.
  • Proven track record of shipping production-grade AI systems, with a focus on GenAI.
  • Product-minded engineer who cares deeply about the 'why' behind what they're building.
  • Pragmatic and results-oriented, knowing how to make the right trade-offs to ship.
  • Natural collaborator who thrives in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Passionate about the fintech landscape and excited about solving complex financial problems for businesses.
  • Expertise in Pleo's technical environment, with Python as the primary language alongside Kotlin and/or Java.
