About the Role
A leading engineering consultancy is seeking a highly experienced Senior HV (EHV) Cabling Design Engineer to join their UK Transmission & Distribution team on a contract basis. This hybrid role offers flexibility between remote and office-based work. As a senior member of the engineering team, you will act as a technical authority for EHV cable systems (11kV-400kV, with emphasis on 132kV and above), supporting major projects and mentoring less experienced engineers. Key Responsibilities
Act as Senior Designer and technical authority for EHV cable engineering within multi-disciplinary project teams. Support the EHV Cable Section Manager in developing the UK EHV cable engineering capability, including mentoring and guiding junior designers. Lead and deliver detailed EHV cable system design packages, ensuring compliance with client and national standards (ENA/BS/IEC/IEEE). Undertake and review cable system studies (ratings, short circuit, thrust, pull force calculations, etc.) and produce design summaries and technical reports. Prepare technical and equipment specifications, and execute complex assignments using advanced engineering techniques. Provide consultancy at FEED stage, including technical reports and presentations. Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and all legal/regulatory requirements for substation EHV cable system design. Conduct technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off. Collaborate with other engineering sections to deliver optimal project outcomes. Develop and implement policies, processes, and technical guidance to enhance engineering capability. Support client meetings, project proposals, and tender presentations. Drive a 'Safety by Design' approach and foster a culture of technical excellence and safety. Maintain compliance with the company's Integrated Management System (IMS). Represent the company professionally, upholding high ethical standards and supporting business development activities.
Requirements
Essential: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline. Minimum 7 years' experience in EHV cable system design and engineering within the electricity transmission & distribution sector, with at least 4 years on UK transmission system projects. Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution (e.g., IET, CIGRE, IEC, IEEE). Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH Cert./Dip., NVQ Level 3+ in H&S). Strong knowledge of UK and international standards, National Grid procedures, and technical specifications for EHV cable systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CAD software. Desirable: Experience with cable rating software (e.g., CRATER, CYMCAP, ETAP, Cableizer). Substation safety and access training (e.g., NSI 30, BESC: AIM). Formal training in CDM 2015, construction safety, and impressed voltages. Experience with National Grid Electricity Transmission projects and procedures. Knowledge of UK Health & Safety and Environmental legislation. Ability to coach and develop team members and contribute to professional bodies/industry groups.
