Senior Data Centre Engineer

for their Manchester site. This position is hands-on within a secure, mission-critical environment, supporting clients across industries such as defence, financial services, cybersecurity, and engineering. The Senior Engineer will take a lead role in maintaining core infrastructure, ensuring operational stability, and providing advanced technical and client support. As the role is highly client-facing, strong communication skills and a professional, organised approach are just as important as technical expertise. Key Responsibilities

Oversee and maintain the data centre environment on-site and remotely, responding quickly and effectively to alerts, incidents, and escalations.

Act as a senior point of contact for service desk requests, changes, and client queries, ensuring timely resolution.

Lead installation, configuration, and maintenance of server racks, structured cabling, and associated hardware.

Deliver advanced remote hands assistance for client systems, ensuring SLA targets are consistently met.

Manage cabling requirements, including patching and cross-connects, and oversee quality standards.

Coordinate logistics for the facility including deliveries, stock levels, and daily operational support tasks.

Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers while upholding data centre best practices.

Carry out additional activities that support secure and reliable data centre operations.

Candidate Profile

Proven experience in a senior or advanced data centre engineering role.

Strong knowledge of infrastructure, cabling systems, and hardware deployment.

Comfortable in client-facing environments, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Highly organised, proactive, and motivated to further develop technical and leadership skills.

Understanding of compliance standards and accreditation requirements in secure environments.

Proficient with IT applications, especially Microsoft Word and Excel.

Track record of delivering high-quality, customer-focused service.

Desirable Skills & Experience

In-depth familiarity with data centre processes and administration.

Knowledge of structured cabling standards and industry best practices.

Hands-on experience with ticketing/service desk platforms.

Broad awareness of networking technologies (switching, routing) and server platforms.

Understanding of electrical power systems in IT environments.

Additional Information

Candidates must be eligible for high-level security clearance.

Must live within 30 minutes of Manchester.

Participation in a 1-in-3 on-call rota will be required.

This role is entirely site-based (no remote working).
