SGS was formed in 2008, originating from the Institute for Energy and Environment at the University of Strathclyde in the UK. In 2020, SGS was acquired by Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc (MEPPI), a wholly owned American subsidiary of Mitsubishi corporation.
Role Overview Smarter Grid Solutions is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our established team in Glasgow.
This position is integral to the ongoing expansion of our DevOps capabilities.
The successful candidate will report to the Director of Software Engineering and will collaborate with various internal teams, contributing significantly to SGS’s product and DevOps strategy.
As a pivotal member of the SGS DevOps team, you will provide support to other DevOps engineers and the broader Product Development department for routine DevOps operations.
Additionally, you will engage in projects aimed at delivering cutting-edge technology solutions to our customers.
Responsibilities and Objectives Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support both development and production workloads across Cloud and On-Premises environments.
Provide training and mentorship to DevOps Engineers, Test Automation Engineers, and Software Developers, fostering knowledge sharing and professional growth.
Develop and maintain documentation to support the Technology team in adopting and integrating new technologies.
Support and manage existing environments (Cloud and On-Premises), delivering training and knowledge transfer to software development and support teams Collaborate with DevOps and Architecture teams to design and implement new Cloud and On-Premises environments.
Work closely with Architects, Senior Developers, and Product Owners to refine, prioritise, and manage the DevOps backlog.
Promote best practices and actively contribute to embedding a DevOps culture within the SGS Product Development team.
Maintain and administer development tools such as GitLab, Jira, and Confluence, ensuring their reliability and effectiveness.
Manage the DevOps tooling suite, driving efficiency, recommending enhancements, and developing migration strategies where appropriate.
Identify and implement opportunities to increase automation and improve efficiency across the software development lifecycle.
Author infrastructure-as-code solutions to provision, configure, and support development environment infrastructure.
Partner with the Security team to integrate security practices into the application development environment.
Conduct research and evaluation of third-party products and services to inform technology decisions.
Collaborate with Technology team members, clients, and internal stakeholders to review, refine, and enhance development and test infrastructure, contributing to the evolution of SGS products.
Assist in feasibility assessments and scoping of technology projects, providing technical insight and recommendations.
Operate independently, managing multiple priorities effectively while adapting to evolving requirements and organisational change.
Required Skills, Experience and Capabilities Experience deploying and managing Cloud and On-Premises using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Vault, Packer & Consul Demonstrated expertise in managing and deploying Kubernetes clusters, with a strong preference for hands-on experience in on-premises environments Strong background in managing infrastructure services including Compute, Storage, and Networking across hybrid environments.
Proficiency in scripting and coding with Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
Hands-on experience in containerisation, including building and testing containers with Docker.
Advanced ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues.
Solid expertise in Windows and Linux system administration.
Demonstrated experience in designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
Knowledge of integrating security scanning and compliance checks into CI/CD workflows .
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable Skills, Experience and Capabilities Working in a highly regulated industry such as a utility or telecoms would be highly advantageous.
AWS Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional) or Azure Solutions Expert.
Certified Kubernetes Administrator.
Certified Kubernetes Application Developer.
HashiCorp Terraform Associate Certification.
HashiCorp Vault associate Certification.
Qualifications and Experience BSc/BEng/MSc/MEng in electrical engineering, industrial control, computer science or similar discipline.
