We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Senior External Hazards Engineer, to be involved in the compliance for game changing technology within the nuclear industry.
As a Senior External Hazards Engineer you will play a key role in supporting the development of the Rolls-Royce SMR Power Station and the successful completion of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) and other licensing and permitting processes.
Key Results & Achievements
- Delivering aspects of the External Hazards delivery programme as part of the overall delivery programme.
- Develop External Hazards submissions for the Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) Case and other projects such as Generic Design Assessment (GDA).
- Providing support to the engineering disciplines to ensure that the design meets external hazards requirements and working with them to close out any gaps.
- Understanding and applying the appropriate level of quality and governance to external hazards reports and any associated submissions.
- Undertaking and presenting the external hazards outputs in support of licensing efforts.
- Represent external hazards at appropriate internal technical and project reviews and at external meetings with the regulator and other stakeholders.
- Assessment of candidate sites for Rolls-Royce SMR Power Stations with respect to external hazards and other factors.
- Training and mentoring others.

Key Selection Criteria
External Hazards and Safety Case Experience
- Knowledge of the types of external hazards that could impact the safe operation of a complex facility, such as an operating Nuclear Power Plant, and in the derivation of withstand requirements.
- Knowledge of Safety Case and Deterministic Safety Assessment.
- Experience of the UK civil nuclear regulatory regime or knowledge of regulatory regime in other countries.
- Experience in the design of a Nuclear Power Plant.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to be able to represent the project both internally and externally.
- A demonstrable ability to work in multidisciplinary teams with staff from all levels to tight deadlines.
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Engineering, Maths, Physics or equivalent or significant relevant industry experience.
We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000 - £62,500 DOE plus:-
- Bonus - Performance related target opportunity 12.5%
- Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
- Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
- Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
- Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
- Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay
- £250 - One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
