Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Tooling

We are ideally seeking someone based near our office in Wickford (Essex). We will also consider UK-based remote workers who are willing to travel to the office occasionally. This role involves leading projects and a small team of engineers in developing tooling for prestigious automotive manufacturing customers.

What you will be doing

  • Tooling Design: Collaborate and innovate to create detailed tooling designs, including fixtures, jigs, clamps, and other specialised equipment required for manufacturing processes.
  • Lead: Lead a small team of engineers throughout the design process.
  • CAD Modelling: Use CAD software to create 2D and 3D models of tooling and mechanical components. Ensure designs are accurate and conform to specifications.
  • Analysis and Testing: Perform structural and functional analysis to assess integrity and performance. Conduct tests and simulations to identify issues and make adjustments.
  • Material Selection: Assist in selecting appropriate materials for tooling components, considering strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Cost Estimation: Participate in cost estimation for tooling projects to help keep them within budget.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continual improvement of mechanical designs, seeking opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality.

What Sets You Apart

  • Experienced in mechanical, industrial tooling design (ideally with automotive experience; all sectors will be considered).
  • Strong proficiency in CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and simulation tools.
  • Relevant engineering qualification or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and machining techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Understanding of safety and quality standards in manufacturing.
  • BPSS clearance – you must be able to obtain and maintain clearance.
