Job Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will report to a Principal Mechanical Engineer on engineering, technical and professional matters and liaise with County Engineering Managers / UU Design Function / Project Engineers on project specific matters. The role will include working closely and developing strong relationships with both internal clients and external partners.

Initially this role will be based within the Area Deployed Team in Lancashire. You will provide Operational Engineering support within the Lancashire area. Reporting to the County Engineering Manager, you will investigate issues and carry out feasibility and outline design on a wide range of equipment.

Throughout your time at United Utilities, you will be responsible for the delivery of a range of projects, studies and investigations including data gathering and analysis, design, preparation of documents, drawings and specifications, review of proposals by others and providing advice and responses to other team members.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Leadership & line management for staff within their UU Mechanical Engineering team.
  • Support for United Utilities operational staff (ADT) in optimizing site production, efficiency, resilience and compliance.
  • Ensuring that all activities undertaken, and engineering outputs provided are in accordance with all applicable legislation, accepted best practice, and relevant internal/external standards.
  • Working closely and developing strong relationships with engineering and programme managers within their delivery area and with all internal/external clients and partners.
  • Demonstrate personal and professional management attributes and qualities commensurate with professional Chartered Status

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) and member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers - or equivalent.
  • Strong technical competence and leadership skills, coupled with high levels of emotional intelligence.
  • Experience in delivering capital and strategic projects, providing operational support in the water industry or similar sectors, whilst optimising whole life cost solutions.
  • Familiarity with CDM responsibilities and ability to act as a competent designer.
  • The candidate will be required to work on their own and as a member of a team, and to lead small multi-disciplinary teams with responsibility for technical outputs.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • A good knowledge of water, wastewater and sludge treatment processes and hydraulic design, together with knowledge and experience of industry standards, procedures and technologies. A working knowledge is required of the interfaces with other disciplines.
  • Experience in delivering projects across the complete project lifecycle from needs to FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) through to detailed design, technical assurance, testing & commissioning and final handover.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer or equivalent
  • Accredited Mechanical Engineering Masters degree (MEng / MSc) or BEng with equivalent further learning.
  • Full UK Drivers Licence
