Overview

Senior Safety Case Engineer position based in Glasgow, Scotland. The role involves supporting current operations and future programmes within a multi-disciplinary engineering team, focusing on safety case documentation for Clyde Nuclear Facilities and related safety assurance activities in a high-hazard environment.

Responsibilities

  • Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of the Clyde Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
  • Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of design changes/concessions.
  • Presentation of Clyde Design substantiations to Clyde "Due Process" nuclear safety committees.
  • Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life.
  • Producing/assessing Periodic Review of Safety reports.
  • Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Production of Independent Technical Assessment (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR) scopes of work.
  • Using a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge to apply existing and emerging technology.
  • Applying theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and recycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high-risk environment.
  • Producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant design modifications to be authorised within a high-hazard industry.
  • Reviewing technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors.
  • Checking and reviewing calculations and technical documents written by other staff.

Qualifications

  • Experience reviewing Safety Case documentation in accordance with client arrangements and Good Practice expectations.
  • Ability to provide safety case advice to internal teams and contractor teams.
  • Experience producing safety justification documents.
  • Attendance at review and project meetings; ability to chair/facilitate safety justification maturity review meetings.
  • Attendance at Hazard Identification Workshops, optioneering reviews and other stakeholder meetings.
  • Experience developing safety assurance strategies for complex projects and delivering or assessing safety cases in a nuclear environment.

Additional desirable attributes

  • Experience within a nuclear defence environment or similar high-risk environment.
  • Familiarity with safety case development techniques (e.g., HAZID/HAZOP).
  • Experience in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly design and assessment of safety-related structures, systems and components.
  • Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and nuclear-specific codes and standards.
  • Experience of safety case delivery relating to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme and safety assurance approaches.
  • For non-nuclear backgrounds, a Nuclear introductory course within 6 months of joining.
  • Minimum HNC or equivalent qualification; Incorporated Engineer status or equivalent; Engineering degree; Chartered Engineer.

Engagement details

This is a contract-based role and has been deemed inside IR35 with a duration of 12 months.
