Senior Software Engineer role within DWP Digital. We are using fresh ideas and leading-edge tech to build and maintain digital solutions that will be used by nearly every person in the UK, every day and at key moments in their lives. DWP is the UK's largest government department and supports people into work and payments worth over £195bn a year.

Location options include Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with a hybrid working model.

What you will do

Delivery, design, development and deployment of high-quality, cloud-native software solutions using platforms like AWS and Azure, and technologies such as Kubernetes, Java, Python, and CI/CD pipelines. Lead application modernisation, system integration, and ensure service reliability while championing engineering best practices and accessibility. Collaborate with engineers, architects, product teams and other stakeholders in a cross-functional, Agile environment. Maintain security and compliance considerations as part of your work. A Security Check clearance is required.

What you will need

  • Full-Stack Development: Strong experience in designing, building, and deploying end-to-end software solutions using modern languages and frameworks such as Java, Python, Node.js, and React.
  • Cloud & DevOps Expertise: Proficiency in cloud platforms like AWS and Azure, with Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code technologies like Terraform.
  • Technical Leadership: Ability to lead engineering teams, set technical direction, and mentor junior developers while promoting best practices and continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Skilled in working with cross-functional teams to deliver user-focused, policy-aligned solutions.
  • Problem Solving & Modernisation: Analysing complex systems, modernising legacy applications, and ensuring service continuity through effective incident and problem management.

Location & Hybrid

Location: in one of our digital hubs (Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle-upon-Tyne). Hybrid model: 40% home, 60% hub.

Pay & Benefits

Pay: Up to £78,517 per year. Pension: Civil service pension with employer contributions of 28.97%, up to £19,758 per year. Holidays: 26 days rising to 31 days with time off for up to 3 extra days per month on flexi-time.
