Senior Structural Design Engineer (Water)
Locations: Warrington or Bristol
We’re working in partnership with a leading Tier 1 contractor to recruit a Senior Structural Design Engineer to join their growing water team. This is a fantastic opportunity to become part of a high-performing business delivering critical infrastructure across the UK. About the Role
This role will see you take a key position within the design team, supporting the delivery of high-quality, compliant structural designs within the water and wastewater sector. You’ll work closely with Principal Engineers, Design Leads, and other stakeholders, and may take on line management responsibilities. It’s a hands-on technical role requiring strong design delivery skills, and you'll contribute across a wide range of areas including engineering governance, procurement, and mentoring.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver structural designs for water and wastewater projects as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
Contribute to early-stage design development, producing reports, calculations, and outline drawings
Carry out detailed structural design in reinforced concrete and steel for above- and below-ground assets
Modify and enhance designs for existing infrastructure, such as treatment plants
Support junior engineers through mentoring and knowledge sharing
Champion carbon-efficient design approaches
Assist in planning, costing, and scheduling with project managers
Engage across disciplines and provide support to construction teams
Focus predominantly on water sector projects, with some involvement in temporary works
Conduct site visits and condition assessments, compiling reports accordingly
Review third-party structural calculations to ensure compliance and safety
What We’re Looking For:
Minimum 5 years’ structural engineering experience, ideally in the water/wastewater sector
Strong knowledge of reinforced concrete design for infrastructure such as pumping stations, reservoirs, and foundations
Deep understanding of relevant design codes, including BS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2)
Experience in both new build projects and structural assessments of existing assets
Proficiency in tools such as STAAD.Pro (for RC tanks), Strand7 (FEA), and TEKLA TEDDS or equivalent
Ability to produce and review detailed structural calculations, specifications, and technical reports
Effective communication and coordination skills
Previous experience working with major clients (e.g., Severn Trent, Thames Water) is a plus
Ability to collaborate with clients and internal teams to deliver tailored technical solutions
Willingness to attend site meetings and contribute across all project phases
