Our client is a market leader in advanced thermal process systems, specialising in combustion, incineration, and waste-to-energy solutions. With a strong reputation for innovation, technical expertise, and environmental sustainability, we deliver cutting-edge, bespoke solutions for clients across the UK and worldwide.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Software Controls Engineer to take ownership of automation, software engineering and electrical controls across multiple high-value projects. This is a hands-on, project-driven role that covers the full lifecycle — from initial concept and software development to FAT/SAT testing and troubleshooting.
You’ll work closely with our Engineering Director, leading initiatives to standardise processes and software libraries while supporting both new builds and legacy systems.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, develop, and implement PLC/HMI/SCADA control systems from scratch (Siemens TIA Portal essential, Mitsubishi desirable).
* Produce technical documentation including Functional Design Specifications (FDS) and O&M manuals.
* Collaborate with engineering and process teams to deliver projects to the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance.
* Support FAT/SAT activities (approximately one per month) and provide remote assistance for field-based issues.
* Work across multiple simultaneous projects, ranging from £50k to £15m in value.
* Maintain and improve software libraries to move towards greater standardisation.
* Ensure compliance with relevant safety systems, SIL, LOPA, and BS EN standards.
About You
* Proven experience developing control systems in Siemens TIA Portal (S5/S7 experience beneficial).
* Background in combustion, thermal processing, or other highly regulated industries.
* Strong knowledge of safety systems, process systems, and relevant legislation.
* Skilled in producing detailed technical documentation.
* Time-served/HNC/HND/Degree in Electrical, Control, or Software Engineering
* Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and within a project team.
* Adaptable and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
What We Offer
* Competitive salary (£60k–£70k)
* 26 days holiday + bank holidays (including Christmas shutdown)
* Good pension scheme
* Bupa healthcare
* Laptop provided
* Opportunities to work on complex, high-profile projects in a specialist engineering field
