We’re looking for a Software Engineer to join our development and maintenance teams and help keep the UK’s welfare systems secure, reliable, and ready for the future. You’ll support critical services and play a key role in modernising legacy systems as we move to cloud platforms.
The role is with DWP Digital, the UK’s largest government department. You’ll join a supportive engineering community and have time and tools to build your skills through coaching, mentoring, and formal learning.
Responsibilities
- Ensure legacy platforms remain secure and reliable while supporting their evolution into scalable, cloud-based services.
- Tackle incidents, implement essential changes, and integrate modern technologies to improve resilience, automation, and citizen experience.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and service owners to challenge delivery and product direction when appropriate.
Skills, knowledge and experience
How you’ll be assessed:
- Personal Details application form.
- Employment history showing relevant work experience, skills, qualifications and accomplishments.
- Personal statement with evidence of:

- Experience managing incidents and problems with a focus on service continuity.
- Stakeholder management of service owners and ability to challenge delivery and products.
- Experience in Linux administration, shell scripting (KSH, Bash) and server configuration to modify or enhance applications across multiple programming languages.
Location & hybrid working
You’ll join us in one of our digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield, whichever is most convenient. We operate a hybrid model—some time at home and some time in a hub.
Pay, pension and holidays
Pay up to £58,347, plus 28.97% employer pension contributions. Holidays start at 26 days and rise to 31 days over time; up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi-time plus public holidays.
