Overview

Expleo is a trusted partner for end-to-end, integrated engineering, quality services and management consulting for digital transformation. We help businesses harness unrelenting technological change to successfully deliver innovations that will help them gain a competitive advantage and improve the everyday lives of people around the globe.

We are looking for an Engineer with a strong background in Systems Engineering to help shape the future of flight as a member of our programme team. In this role, working at TRLs 1-6, you will be responsible for Systems Engineering from requirements elucidation, development, specification and test definition, including integration across multiple aircraft systems.

The customer is developing technology to support the development of hydrogen-powered passenger carrying aircraft. They are developing technologies to support a Hydrogen Electric Hybrid Propulsion System architecture and conducting associated subsystem test campaigns. The concept propulsion system includes novel architecture features including hybridisation and cryogenic cooling. The programme also seeks to establish a high quality simulation of key features of a typical in-service standard aircraft with an associated requirement set, to derive critical technology demonstration objectives.

This work is one of the hydrogen research programmes which the customer is leading, and the programme is currently within a technology development phase of several technologies and subsystems. The programme focuses on requirement capture for a notional aircraft and system combination focused on an entry into service standard of hardware. Development of the aircraft and system architecture is being completed internally by the customer. Capture of this requirement set forms the basis of validation and verification requirements for the powertrain technologies, and defines contractual specifications for a number of supplier work-packages.

Responsibilities

  • The programme requires sub-contract systems engineering/requirements engineering capability to complete project objectives.
  • Work closely with the systems engineering team, other specialist domain and subsystem teams.
  • The work will be led by the Principal Systems Engineer (WorkStream Lead), supported by the Technical Authority – Controls & Systems. Key objectives include:
  • Primary
    • Update existing platform/system and subsystem requirements in key areas to service technology launch activities. Implementing to-do items in Codebeamer; restructuring requirements management structure where appropriate.
    • Add requirement traceability links.
    • Complete Design Iteration requirement updates.
    • Ensure completion of requirement sets for the set of distinct priority system platforms.
    • Ensure the requirements framework structure is created to support the future project state (e.g. to support future technology test platforms).
    • Quality checks, liaising with cross-domain team members to ensure requirement quality standards are achieved.
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Secondary
    • Develop suitable requirements architecture for future project alignment.
    • Develop Verification & Validation requirements framework strategy.
    • Support the systems team to develop the MBSE architecture and ensure consistency with the requirements structure.

Regular reviews will be held with the supervising manager to check progress and consistency of the requirement set. Individuals should be comfortable with presenting and drafting technical reports of their work and be prepared to discuss and review with members of the hydrogen programmes engineering team as required.

Essential skills

  • Ability to work across domain teams and levels within an organisation.
  • Systems engineering competency.
  • Experience in early-stage system development.
  • Experience developing requirements quality standards and conducting quality checks.
  • Ability to write technical reports and present to technical reviews.

Desired skills

  • MBSE competency.
  • Structured verification knowledge.
  • Familiarity or experience with physical system modelling or design (MATLAB/SIMULINK/SIMSCAPE/AMESIM or similar) in electrical, fluid, thermal or mechanical domains.

Experience

  • Requirements Engineering experience (ideally within an R&T / R&D context).
  • Codebeamer - experienced user.
  • Experience in knowledge management.
  • Aerospace domain relevant knowledge and experience.
  • Experience in developing system architecture solutions against a requirement set.

What do I need before I apply

  • On-site support and co-location with the Workstream teams developing the technology is mandatory for a minimum of three days per week due to the fast moving and collaborative nature of the programme, which requires on-site attendance to adequately capture the requirement set at the current stage of the programme.
