About Us MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people, and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing, and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations on how to keep themselves safe. The Role As a Trainee EMC Engineer, you’ll learn to develop and utilise electro-magnetic capabilities that support our operational vehicle fleet – while embarking on a dedicated training pathway designed to turn you into a fully-trained EMC engineer. You’ll join one of a range of teams across MI5’s Vehicle Engineering Department and meet unique customer requirements at our organisation, as well as MI6 and GCHQ. Your role will involve a range of bespoke engineering projects and working alongside friendly colleagues who’ll share a variety of capabilities and tradecrafts with you. The pathway is aimed at achieving your promotion to the next grade and then progression from there, assessed via a capability framework. You’ll begin by providing advice and assistance to a small team of technicians. You might be using radio frequency (RF) and digital measuring equipment, carrying out assessments of vehicular EMC capabilities or compiling detailed reports for operational teams. All work must be completed in line with the relevant EMC directives and standards. You’ll be involved in a variety of tasks, working both within your department and collaborating with different teams. Whether you’re providing EMC guidance to vehicle installation team members, supporting the development of covert operational vehicles, or being tasked with your own EMC projects, you’ll enjoy a blend of autonomy and supervised work. These projects help to achieve MI5’s objective. As your skills and confidence grow, you’ll gain access to advanced training, enabling you to become a subject matter expert (SME) in various technologies. About You To apply, you’ll need GCSEs in English language and maths at Grade 4/C, or an equivalent qualification. You’ll be required to have an Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) or equivalent qualification in an electronics or related discipline. You’ll also have some knowledge of RF principles, which could come from industry experience, higher education, amateur interest in radio, or police and military communication experience. You must hold or be actively working towards attaining a full UK driving licence. You don’t need any specific EMC experience, as you’ll learn everything you need to on the training pathway. This includes training regarding standard EMC tasks and the regulations that underpin them. Importantly, you’ll have a genuine interest in this field and the drive to learn technical skills. Being comfortable working in a team, you bring excellent problem-solving, communication, and writing skills to the role. Regular contact with customers across the intelligence community and providing written reports are part of the responsibilities. Practical and proactive, you’ll approach tasks with curiosity and a can-do attitude. Please note, you’ll be required to undertake a medical assessment as part of the application process. Due to the nature of the role and in accordance with the Health and Safety Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016, we are unable to accept applications from candidates with active implantable medical devices. These include: • Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs)• Cochlear implants• Cardiac pacemakers• Insulin pumps• Brain stem implants• Drug infusion pumps• Neuro stimulators This is because you’ll be working in close proximity to electromagnetic fields, which may interfere, with or damage, these devices. Training and Development This role offers continuous opportunities for learning and skill development. Upon joining, you’ll complete a service induction before becoming part of the EMC team. Once in the role, you’ll be mentored by other members of the EMC team, who’ll provide on-the-job guidance, support, and training. Additionally, you’ll shadow other areas of the Vehicle Engineering Department, such as research and development, and bespoke vehicle installation. Furthermore, you’ll have access to a range of training courses and programmes to further your knowledge of EMC development and application. These include foundational courses, advanced training, certification programmes, practical workshops, and online courses.
