2nd Level Application Support Engineer (IT) / Contractor at Free-Work UK. This role involves providing second-level application support within an equities platform context and working closely with developers, technical analysts, and testing colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor application components.
  • Provide global support, including weekend availability to troubleshoot production-related issues and perform checkouts.
  • Operate in Windows and Linux environments with scripting (Shell, Perl, Python, etc.).
  • Utilize configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible).
  • Work with CI tools (Bamboo or Jenkins).
  • Work independently and in teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Debug production issues and implement fixes.
  • Handle complex operational tasks and recommend process or technology changes.
  • Build monitoring tools for production environments.
  • Support expedient deployment of new systems; assist with capacity planning for growing volumes.
  • Understand networking and storage concepts.
  • Escalate or follow up on permanent fixes with development teams.
  • Provide solutions for application automation.
  • Communicate outages to end users when required.
  • Resolve complex application and technical problems; build, test, and install software in Dev, QA, Prod/DR environments.
  • Support activities across Analysis, Design, Development, and Testing of components.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics (preferred).
  • 3+ years in support roles within the financial industry.
  • Experience in Windows and Linux environments with scripting.
  • Basic infrastructure concepts knowledge.
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools (Bamboo or Jenkins).
  • Hands-on support experience in a real-time trading environment.
  • Knowledge of high-performance messaging/middleware and FIX protocol.
  • Strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Java, C#, or C++ is a plus.

  • Contract duration: 12 months.
  • Rate: circa £400 per day.
