Appointments are anticipated to last up to one year from appointment date. The relief Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the machinery, mechanical, and electrical systems on the Research Vessel (R/V) Taani, under the overall direction of the Master.Why OSU?Working for Oregon State University is so much more than a job! We apply knowledge, tools and skills to build a better future for all.Key Responsibilities60% – Stand watch as needed as the roving engineer at sea and as daily duty engineer in ports other than Newport on a rotating basis with the other engineers. Assume responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the engineering plant including checks of pressures and temperatures, fuel consumption, fluid levels, and conditions of operating machinery to ensure safe, economical, and efficient operation. Update computerized maintenance software and other logs/records as needed.20% – Organize, direct, and supervise the Engine Department to provide safe, efficient operation of the ship’s machinery, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel and ballast systems, and firefighting systems. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Supervises repairs and maintenance; plans, assigns, and reviews work; manages performance and safety.10% – Maintain fuel, lube oil, freshwater repair parts, and maintenance materials; report expenditures and levels to the Master. Maintain engineering daily work logs and reports in accordance with the ship’s Safety Management System (SMS).10% – Schedule engineering watches, assign daily duties to Engineers, supervise repairs, assist in repair of scientific equipment as needed, maintain firefighting equipment, participate in fire response, and provide First Aid/CPR when required. Perform other duties as assigned.What You Will NeedValid Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) with the rating: Chief Engineer Limited Oceans (USCG).Current Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsements as appropriate.Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).Ability to obtain a passport.Ability to speak, read, and write English.Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements.Solid understanding of basic computer programs including Microsoft Office.Minimum of one (1) year of experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).What We Would Like You to HaveMMC with Chief Engineer Unlimited HP (USCG).Two years’ experience as Chief Engineer of a vessel of comparable size, or equivalent military service.Prior experience on research vessels in the UNOLS fleet or elsewhere.Two years of experience with a safety management system as described by the ISM Code.At least one year of supervisory experience.Vessel Security Officer Certificate.K POS DO Maintenance Training (or equivalent).Working Conditions / Work ScheduleThe employee works on board OSU-operated research vessels at sea on cruises that may last from one day to three weeks or more. The incumbent must be able to cope with variable ocean and weather conditions. The ability to lift up to 40 pounds is required. Ship Operations is a seven-day-per-week operation; weekend and holiday work may be required.
