Primary purpose and function

Primary purpose and function: Reporting to the First Line Manager in the Logistics Department, the role of an Engineering Operator Technician is a multi-skilled position. The main purpose is to carry out planned and reactive maintenance in support of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). The role is vital for the efficiency, quality and cost of the plant. An Engineering Operator Technician will aim to improve the reliability and safety of the plant and production processes from a mechanical and electrical perspective.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across the ASRS.
  • Undertake, drive and support maintenance and improvement activities.
  • Identify continuous improvement (CI) opportunities.
  • Developing SOPs and learning documents to share best practice across shifts with respect to maintenance and Continuous Improvement Loop (CIL).
  • Develop and maintain safety and maintenance procedures; review and develop SWIs.
  • Liaise with suppliers of OEMs for the provision of spares/services.
  • Support the development and maintenance of a high-performance, flexible and “can do” culture.
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance and machine fault diagnosis and repairs.
  • Use plant optimisation tools to ensure sustainability of high departmental standards including 5S, Hygiene and PDCA.
  • Record all maintenance activities within the maintenance management system (SAP).
  • Maintenance prioritisation and planning; analyse machines to improve performance; identify critical spares; refurbish spares as required.
  • Complete work at heights, in confined spaces, and as a lone worker; participate in project work.
  • Carry out quality inspections on jobs; liaise and assist client departments and customers.
  • Control maintenance tools, stores and equipment; monitor and control maintenance costs; ensure safety systems are in working order.

Key Skills, Knowledge and Competencies

  • Comply with health, safety, hygiene and 5S standards; professional, proactive and self-managed engineer with a can-do attitude.
  • Good communication skills; ability to work with external contractors when required.
  • Understanding of LEAN, Continuous Improvements, HACCP, and Food Safety protocols.
  • Ability to support VPO compliance and sustainability; positive, high-performance, CI-focused mindset.
  • Support a learning organization; strong numerical, IT literacy and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong team-working, structured and systematic approach, and ability to work autonomously within deadlines.

Key Experience and Qualifications

  • Recognised apprenticeship, NVQ3, HNC or equivalent mechanical/electrical qualification.
  • FLT license is desirable.
  • Experience in FMCG/Logistics Operations; proven fault-finding and maintenance skills.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplined engineering function; excellent knowledge of manufacturing principles, tools and techniques.
  • Good numeracy, literacy and verbal communication skills.
