The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Structural Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Scotland. We have design hubs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Motherwell, Perth, and Aberdeen together with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn and Huntly. Our Amey Consulting Structures Team are involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across the UK. Amey delivers a range of local, national and international infrastructure projects for clients including Transport Scotland, Network Rail, National Highways, Local Authorities and Contractors. We have secured multiple long-term contracts and continue to grow and expand into new regions and markets.

The Role

As an Assistant Structural/Bridge Engineer, you will play an important part in every stage of a project from inception to completion. You will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of highway structures schemes while taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers. Responsibilities include:

  • To work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
  • Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria.
  • Working within a locally based technical team and taking responsibility for the delivery of activities within a scheme project and team portfolio.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work-winning functions.
  • Support effective health and safety practices within the team.
  • Experience with sustainability practices in engineering.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

What You Will Bring To Us

  • Successful completion of a Degree Apprenticeship programme or an employer-led early careers development programme, with progress towards Incorporated or Chartered status.
  • Knowledge of structures design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline.
  • Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with relevant standards and client requirements, working with limited supervision and mentoring junior staff.
  • Experience with health, safety and welfare procedures (e.g., Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations).
  • Understanding of technical and specification processes and ownership for deliverables with appropriate supervision.
  • Good competence with relevant software and analytical tools.
  • Basic understanding of CDM and risk assessment; able to manage and communicate hazards and risks on projects.
  • Understanding of project interfaces and how deliverables align across disciplines.
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject.

Key Responsibilities Of The Role

  • Take ownership and support management and technical delivery of projects from start to finish.
  • Prepare designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation as part of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost, and programme criteria.
  • Support and guide more junior staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • Contribute to the professional development of junior staff and pursue your own professional development.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings, and respond to queries.
  • Work within locally based technical team and deliver activities within a scheme project and portfolio.
  • Contribute to bid preparation and general work-winning functions.
  • Promote Health and Safety practices within the team and sustainability in engineering.
  • Demonstrate good project management skills, particularly for multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

What You Will Bring To Us (Continued)

  • Team player who questions the status quo and develops innovative engineering solutions tailored to project scope and environment.
  • Experience and expertise within the structures field, likely from an Assistant Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions compliant with standards (DMRB, Eurocodes, CIRIA, etc.).
  • Ownership of deliverables and ability to check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of CDM and risk assessment applied to design and construction.
  • Understanding of interface management and alignment with other disciplines.
  • Evidence of progress toward Incorporated or Chartered status with ICE or IStructE, or equivalent professional licence.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
