The role: Our Client is looking for an Assistant Engineer (Highways) to join the Capital Programme Division within Corporate Services. This role offers the opportunity to be part of a team delivering key highway projects across the city. You will support the provision of cost-effective consultancy services, help manage projects from feasibility through delivery, and ensure work meets statutory, regulatory, and council objectives. This is a 1-year opening assignment with hybrid working arrangements, giving you the chance to contribute to meaningful improvements in Manchester’s transport infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the delivery of highway projects to agreed time, cost, and quality standards.
• Support contract administration and monitor contractor performance.
• Work with stakeholders and colleagues to ensure project briefs are met.
• Contribute to collaborative working across council departments.
• Assist with project budgets, ensuring income and expenditure are closely monitored.
• Represent the council in consultations and public engagement where required.

• A degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.
• Knowledge of highways, engineering design, and project delivery.
• Strong organisational, communication, and financial management skills.
