Job Title: Carpenter / Fabric Technician Site Location: London near Embankment
Salary: TBA Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8 hours per day with 1 hour unpaid lunch break) Participation required in weekend working, call-out rota, and out-of-hours work as needed.
Summary
You will be working for one of the UK's finest and largest 18th-century buildings, internationally significant to architectural heritage. It serves as a major arts and cultural centre in central London, featuring seasonal attractions such as dancing fountains in summer and an ice rink in winter. The venue also hosts contemporary art and design exhibitions, free displays, family workshops, and guided tours.
The Carpenter / Fabric Technician plays a key role in both planned and reactive maintenance of this Grade I listed historic building. Responsibilities include carpentry, decorative work, and general building fabric repairs. The role also supports services for resident offices, exhibitions, and events.
Responsibilities
* Completion of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) for all fabric elements of the building
* Execution of reactive maintenance tasks as required or directed
* Undertaking ad-hoc fabric works, including preparing quotes
* Completion of quoted works, including outside normal working hours
* Occasional report writing
* Compliance with Health, Safety & Environmental procedures
* Represent Somerset House professionally, upholding its core values
Skills and Experience
Essential:
* Time-served carpenter
* Experience working in heritage environments
* City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry
* General building experience
* Willingness to work outside normal business hours
* Strong communication skills; client-facing
Desirable:
* Multi-skilled with experience in other trades and practices
Personal Profile
* Self-motivated and capable of working independently or as part of a team
* Able to manage workloads and meet deadlines
* Flexible and positive “can-do” attitude
