Location: Hybrid – 3 days per week in the Glasgow office, 2 days from home
Duration: 12 months+
Hours: 40 per week
Security Clearance: Security Check (SC) , but candidates may be considered for clearance if eligible
Start Date: Immediate start
Contract Type: Umbrella (PAYE) only – Inside IR35
Rate: Flexible
Role Overview This role is within a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for the design integrity and safety justification of critical defence infrastructure, systems, structures, and components (SSC) that interface with nuclear propulsion and weapons systems.
The Civil / Structural Engineer will provide technical expertise in the design assessment, substantiation, and modification of civil and structural systems within nuclear facilities. The position covers both operational support and future development projects, ensuring compliance with safety, operational, and legislative requirements in a high-hazard environment.
Key Responsibilities
Author, review, and maintain civil/structural design substantiation documents for nuclear infrastructure
Manage design changes, concessions, and technical justifications
Present design substantiations to nuclear safety committees
Produce and maintain Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules, procedures, and records
Contribute to periodic safety reviews and independent technical assessments
Provide specialist civil/structural engineering advice to internal and external stakeholders
Review technical reports, calculations, and safety case submissions from contractors and colleagues
Ensure design intent, safety factors, and operational requirements are met in accordance with British Standards, Eurocodes, and nuclear-specific codes and regulations
Essential Experience
Minimum 5 years’ experience in the design assessment of reinforced concrete and steel structures under dynamic loads (earthquake, blast, wind, rain, snow)
Proven experience with reinforced concrete structures and marine jetties
Ability to produce robust technical justifications for civil/structural modifications in high-hazard industries
Application of engineering principles in nuclear or other high-risk environments
Strong knowledge of British Standards and Eurocodes
Desirable Experience
Previous experience in a UK nuclear industry environment
Familiarity with safety case development techniques such as HAZID and HAZOP
Knowledge of UK and US nuclear regulatory frameworks and nuclear-specific codes and standards
Qualifications Essential:
HND or Degree in civil or structural engineering (or equivalent)
Incorporated Engineer (or equivalent experience)
Completion of a nuclear introductory course within 6 months (if from a non-nuclear background)
Desirable:
Chartered Engineer status
