Commissioning Engineer – Logistics or production background essential.\n\nRate: £42 per hour pay rate (stay away) £37 per hour pay rate (local)\n\nLocation: Nottingham (with mix of commissioning and reactive service work on customer sites)\n Hours: 40 hours per week\n Contract Length: Initial 3 Months (with potential extension)\n\nOur client\n\nA rapidly expanding industrial engineering business delivering end-to-end automation and control system solutions for the warehouse and logistics industry. Their services span PLC programming, HMI software, hardware design, panel manufacture, installation, commissioning, and ongoing technical support.\n\nThe contractor\n\nWe are seeking a highly skilled Commissioning Engineer to take ownership of commissioning and testing electrical and control systems for a wide range of automated machinery. This role will be both site- and office-based, with blocks of work on client sites lasting up to 6 weeks.
You’ll be at the heart of ensuring systems run smoothly, safely, and efficiently from installation through to handover.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nCommissioning and testing of electrical & control systems after build.\nRunning full commissioning phases on site.\nOn-site verification of new control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA.\nProgramming, modifying, and tuning software to optimise performance and resolve issues.\nTroubleshooting electrical, pneumatic, and control component problems.\nExecuting and documenting functional test procedures to meet performance and safety standards.\nPreparing and updating technical documentation (test reports, operating manuals, etc.).\nCollaborating with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients to align commissioning activities.\nTraining client operators and maintenance teams on proper system use and upkeep.\nWorking primarily with Siemens S7 systems and occasionally Allen Bradley.\nCommissioning machines such as conveyors, robots, scanners, and stackers.\nDay-to-Day Responsibilities\n\nCarry out commissioning and verification of control systems on-site.\nModify PLC code and make software adjustments during start-up.\nPerform fault-finding and resolve system-level and component-level issues.\nConduct functional and safety testing, providing clear documentation.\nCollaborate with internal teams and client stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.\nProvide operator and maintenance training where required.\nRequired Skills & Experience\n\nBackground in commissioning within automation or production machinery.\nProven experience commissioning Siemens PLCs.\nAbility to write, modify, and troubleshoot PLC code.\nStrong knowledge of control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA.\nProficient in programming and troubleshooting control software.\nConfident in interpreting electrical and pneumatic diagrams.\nUnderstanding of industrial hardware such as motors, drives, and sensors.\nPrevious Siemens training (TIA Portal, Safety Systems & Siemens Drives) ideal, but not essential.\n\nKey Challenges in the Role\n\nManaging long on-site commissioning phases (up to 6 weeks).\nRapidly diagnosing and resolving complex system faults.\nBalancing technical precision with project deadlines.\nAdapting to a wide range of automation equipment and client environments.\nEnsuring accurate documentation and knowledge transfer to client teams.\nApply Today\n\nTake the next step in your engineering career with a dynamic and well-established company.\n\nApply directly on this site or send your CV to (url removed)\n\nATA Recruitment specialises in contract and permanent roles within Manufacturing, Civil, Infrastructure, Transportation, and General Engineering.\n\nFor more roles like this, visit: \n\nBy applying, you agree to our Privacy Policy.
