Responsibilities
- The mechanical design of components through concept, definitive and detail design phases.
- Carry out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, basic stress calculations, FMEA’s, 2D layouts, 2D detailing, tolerance stacks as required. Agreeing the design approach with the project Chief or Lead Designer.
- System and component specifications and ensuring the design meets requirements.
- Creation of 2D drawings to enable manufacture or purchase.
- Creation of assembly drawings and bill of materials.
- Carry out design change requests as per process and in a timely manner.
- Fit and function of responsible parts or systems and their interaction with other systems.
- Ensure layout drawings are up to date.
- Creation of component or system design plans.
- Meet design timing plans on assigned tasks.
- Work closely with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure products are designed for manufacture & assembly.
- Report progress of all assigned tasks to project management teams, chief designer or engineering manager.
- Create technical reports and documentation as required for engineering projects.
- Highlight mechanical technical risks to the chief designer or engineering manager.
- Prepare and present mechanical designs at design reviews; generate minutes if required.
- Keep up to date with latest manufacturing techniques, drawing standards, technology trends, and design tools.
- Liaise with suppliers and Ricardo departments to ensure information is available and customer requests are handled in a timely manner.
- Ensure design files and documentation are kept up to date and stored per department procedures.
Qualifications
- Degree (Bachelor or Masters) in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
- Experience as a Design Engineer.
- Broad mechanical design knowledge with experience in Engine design (castings, housings, air paths, cranktrain, cylinder head, cylinder block, fuel systems, etc.).
- Experience in off-highway, heavy duty diesel, industrial, medium speed, marine or large engine areas preferred.
- Proficient in CREO.
- PLM experience (PTC Windchill PRD or similar).
- Familiarity with technical specifications and GD&T.
- Ability to produce high-standard technical drawings and meet deadlines.
- Confident, proactive, and able to lead in challenging situations.
- Good communication skills with colleagues, external clients, and suppliers.
