Overview

Senior Data Engineer (Real World Data) to join the Clinical Practice Research Datalink team in the Safety and Surveillance group. This is a full-time opportunity on a 24-month fixed term contract/internal move or temporary promotion basis. The role is based at 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU and can only be worked in the UK.

We are implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working with a minimum of 4 days per month on site to enable collaboration with partners and stakeholders. Attendance on site is driven by business needs and can flex up to 8 days a month, with the remainder of time spent remotely or in the office. Some roles may require more regular on-site presence.

About MHRA and CPRD

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) enhances and improves the health of millions through regulation of medicines and medical devices, backed by science and research. The Safety and Surveillance Group combines devices and medicines safety expertise with enforcement capabilities and data/evidence generation facilities, complemented by the new Safety Connect System. The Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), part of the Safety and Surveillance group and supported by NIHR, is the UK\'s leading research service providing anonymised NHS data for research. CPRD supports high quality observational research and real world data for clinical trials and interventional studies.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UK Government\'s premier data-driven research service. We seek an individual with team or project leadership experience in data processing, data access, and data analysis systems to develop and support end-to-end data processing solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop end-to-end Extraction Transform Load (ETL) data processing solutions from data collection through to delivery.
  • Maintain and support CPRD\'s data processing pipelines; ensure data assets are of high quality with appropriate metadata.
  • Identify optimisations to enable scaling and repeatable use of data.
  • Development of end-to-end ETL data processing.
  • Continuous improvement and enhancements; add value to research datasets.
  • Assure, monitor, and validate data flows and people management.

Qualifications

  • Be educated to degree level, or equivalent, in computer science, IT, maths, or related discipline, or equivalent work-related experience.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and testing data products that are complex or large-scale.
  • Experience selecting and implementing technologies to deliver resilient, scalable, future-proofed data solutions.
  • Proven ability to respond to problems in databases, data processes, data products and services as they occur.
  • Hands-on experience using standards and tools to design, code, test, correct and document moderate-to-complex programs and scripts.

Security, Compliance and Eligibility

  • Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check and baseline personnel security standard checks for government assets.
  • Post holders may require vaccinations or health surveillance in certain roles; some roles require travel overseas where vaccination may be required.
  • Applicants will be subject to checking Internal Fraud Database (IFD) as part of pre-employment screening.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: £58,983 with a Civil Service Pension contribution of £17,087. Benefits include Civil Service Pension Scheme, annual leave, bank holidays, mobility, flexible working, season ticket or bike loan, employee assistance, and development opportunities.

  • Annual Leave: 25 days on entry, rising to 30 days with service, plus 8 bank holidays
  • Privilege Leave: 1 day
  • Hours of Work: 37 hours per week (full-time), pro rata for part-time
  • Occupational Sick Pay: up to five months full pay/half pay depending on service
