Role Overview As a Shift Engineer, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems. Your core objective will be to maintain 100% system uptime through proactive maintenance, effective change control, and swift incident response. You will also manage sub-contractors, oversee preventative maintenance schedules, and help deliver a resilient, compliant, and high-performing engineering service. Key Responsibilities
Operate and maintain electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems. Monitor, log, and troubleshoot all plant and equipment, resolving incidents promptly. Manage critical building systems, including:
Low and medium voltage electrical systems Mechanical plant and HVAC systems UPS and generator systems Fire detection and suppression systems Domestic and chilled water systems
Perform authorised low and high voltage switching operations. Utilise systems such as:
BMS (Building Management System) PMS (Power Monitoring System) CMS (Control & Monitoring System)
Oversee and support the delivery of PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance). Coordinate sub-contracted engineers, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance. Follow operational and change management procedures, using service desk/ticketing systems.
Desirable Experience & Qualifications
Completed engineering apprenticeship or equivalent. HND or equivalent in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (preferred). Experience in high-pressure, mission-critical environments (e.g., data centres). Industry-recognised certifications (e.g., NCC, REC, or equivalent). Strong working knowledge of:
Low and medium voltage systems HVAC and mechanical plant Electrical safety regulations and best practices
Key Attributes
Strong problem-solving ability, with proficiency in Root Cause Analysis (RCA). Experience working within structured change management environments. Attention to detail and adherence to safety and compliance protocols. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Self-motivated, proactive, and resilient under pressure. Familiarity with BMS systems and CAFM/PPM platforms.
