We are a team of vibrant professionals with experience across a range of sectors including renewables, infrastructure, defence, regulation and policy, resources, and the urban development sector.

This is an exciting time to join Umwelt, as we have experienced significant growth in recent years and are now seeking to recruit a Data Engineer to help streamline our processes and develop fit for purpose solutions.

About the Role:

As a Data Engineer at Umwelt, you will play a pivotal role in defining and embedding our new Digital Habitat, enhancing data management and engineering capabilities to meet current needs while enabling future growth and the adoption of advanced data and AI solutions. This role will strengthen the technical foundations of the Digital Habitat, improve access to trusted, well structured data and establish clear reporting pathways to support analytics and decision making. Working closely with technology teams and business stakeholders, the Data Engineer will design and implement secure, scalable data pipelines and automated ETL processes, apply sound data governance practices, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Digital Habitat by integrating new data sources and streams over time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines that integrate and transform data from multiple sources
  • Ingest and transform data using platforms such as Fabric, Spark, or similar modern data tools.
  • Implement CI/CD practices to automate deployment, testing, and monitoring of data solutions
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to understand data requirements and design fit for purpose solutions
  • Support data governance, security, and compliance in line with organisational and regulatory requirements
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of analytics solutions (e.g. Business Intelligence dashboards, reports) to enable evidence-based decision-making
  • Partner with business teams to translate requirements into technical deliverables, iterating on insights and improvements
  • Contribute to the setup and optimisation of data storage, access, and backup strategies
  • Establish monitoring, documentation, and quality practices to ensure data reliability and reproducibility
  • Participate in ongoing IT and data improvement initiatives, particularly where they intersect with automation, reporting, and decision support
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve efficiency, scalability, and usability of data and analytics systems

About You:

  • Demonstrated experience in data engineering, software development, or related technical roles.
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a similar degree
  • Strong programming skills in at least one language relevant to data engineering (e.g., Python, SQL, or similar)
  • Experience with ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines, and working with large datasets
  • Strong understanding of data modelling, data quality, and governance principles
  • Understanding of CI/CD practices and modern software engineering workflows
  • Experience using analytics and visualisation tools (preferably Power BI) to deliver insights to stakeholders
  • Ability to translate business questions into technical data solutions and clear reporting outcomes
