Overview

You will be part of a community of experts in Information Digital Engineering, embedding AI across the organisation to improve existing businesses and accelerate the development of clean energy solutions. The Data & Engineering family creates business value daily through data & software engineering, turning information into actionable insights for Shell.

Responsibilities

  • What's the role: As a data engineer, you will work closely with traders and analysts to create data solutions in Python, Databricks and Azure to extract, process, store and display data, in line with best practice software engineering processes and architecture patterns. In collaboration with a quantitative engineer, you will help productionize traders' quantitative models into data-driven software applications.
  • What you'll be doing: Design and build data foundations and end-to-end solutions for Shell to maximise value from data. Help convert Vision and Data Strategy for IT solutions and deliver them. Enable data-driven thinking across the organisation, not just in IT teams, but also with the wider Shell stakeholder community. Core activities include: communicating with technical developers and business managers; delivering the roll-out and embedding of Data Foundation initiatives; coordinating change management, incident management and problem management; ensuring traceability of requirements from data through testing and scope changes, training and transition; and driving implementation efficiency across pilots and future projects to minimise cost and maximise value.

Qualifications

  • Degree level in STEM, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a relevant field of applied mathematics.
  • Proven experience in the IT industry with a track record as a technology champion in relational databases, data warehouses, SQL, and familiarity with NoSQL databases; able to create end-to-end data pipelines.
  • Experience building and optimising complex queries; ability to manipulate, process and extract value from large, disconnected datasets.
  • Experience with cloud-based data engineering technologies (Azure, AWS) and Databricks; experience handling large data sets is an asset.
  • Strong Python development skills, including web development, cloud (Azure preferred), Docker, testing, and DevOps (Terraform and GitHub Actions preferred).
  • Knowledge of application design, security, release, testing and packaging.
  • Understanding of Data Foundation initiatives (Data Modelling, Data Quality Management, Data Governance, Data Maturity Assessments, Data Strategy) in support of business stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of math and finance, as the role interacts with Quant Devs, analysts and traders.
  • Experience with AGILE/KANBAN methodologies and ability to run a sprint.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced front-office environment and communicate with Quant Devs, analysts and traders.
  • Gas/Power trading knowledge (preferably LNG) and risk modelling understanding. Quantitative modelling skills (statistical methods for valuation and predictive models).
  • Experience with CI/CD build and release pipelines; scripting languages (YAML, PowerShell, Terraform, etc.).
  • Experience with big data tools (Kafka, Hadoop, Spark) and stream-processing systems; experience with data pipeline/workflow tools (Azkaban, Luigi, Airflow, etc.).
  • Azure certification or equivalent is preferred.
