Overview

Role: Data Scientist or AI Engineer at University of Bristol. The Jean Golding Institute is the central hub for data science and AI at the University of Bristol. We are looking for an enthusiastic Data Scientist with AI or other data science expertise to join the seven-member Research Engineering Team at the Institute. The team provides in-depth technical support in data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and research software engineering to research projects across the University.

What you will be doing

  • Members are assigned to multiple long- and short-term research projects from across the University. Typically, time is split with about 50% on one long-term project and the remainder on other activities or short-term projects.
  • Contribute to Institute activities to grow data science, AI and research software engineering capacity, including day-to-day helpdesk queries, training for researchers (best practices in data science, AI and software engineering), and organizing internal events (seminars, workshops, interest groups, data competitions, hackathons and outreach).
  • Network with researchers to develop funding bids and support from the Institute.

What you should apply if

  • Experience, preferably in a team environment, of engineering AI solutions to problems (especially neural networks or large language models) and/or applying data science techniques (such as Bayesian or similar statistical modelling).
  • Comfort collaborating with researchers outside your own area of expertise and able to recommend and implement technical solutions in those areas. Ability to communicate advantages and disadvantages of techniques/tools and agree a suitable approach for each project.
  • Fluency in Python and/or R, with demonstrable use of other programming languages for research or an interest in learning new languages.
  • Experience applying best practices in software engineering, such as version control, testing and documentation, and the ability to embed those practices within projects.
  • Willingness to work on a wide range of projects as dictated by the needs of researchers at the University.
