Role

Safety Engineer – you will be part of a team of engineers within the technical discipline of Safety Engineering. You will provide expert advice and guidance to support the delivery of Acquisition Safety policy and solutions for simple equipment, managing project safety risks throughout the lifecycle to deliver safe and suitable equipment, systems, and services to Front Line Commands. There is opportunity to specialise in areas such as system safety policy and governance, system safety management, and system safety assurance and audit.

You may have the opportunity to travel to various UK locations, including visiting suppliers sites. We champion flexible ways of working with regular in-person attendance required (approximately 60% of your working week) to promote face-to-face collaboration, alongside flexible hours to support work-life balance and business need. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourself with site, team, and role.

Responsibilities

  • Generate technical safety requirements and documentation for subsystems, considering in-service support and costs, including specifying safety-related systems architectures up to the highest safety integrity levels.
  • Support the development and management of effective Safety Management Systems. Identify and analyse hazards and contribute to risk reduction measures, ensuring they are documented and managed.
  • Differentiate and comply with relevant safety legislation, regulation, policy, processes and standards to deliver technical documentation for a subsystem, including quality, safety, security and sustainability, and interoperability with other subsystems.
  • Act upon identified risk (safety, environment, support, financial) and apply risk escalation and transfer principles.
  • Participate in and scrutinise the system safety process: test, verification, validation, and evaluation.
  • Support technical assurance activities within the scope of your discipline.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of policy and process to satisfy DE&S corporate standards for Acquisition Safety Management.

Qualifications and eligibility

  • Hold a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics qualification at RQF Level 4 or higher.
  • Experience providing technical advice and delivering safety/systems acquisition outcomes.
  • Technical safety systems/safety acquisition/engineering experience across contexts.
  • Professional registration with a relevant body (EngTech or RSciTech) or, if not registered, a minimum RQF Level 6 in a Science, Technology or Engineering discipline.
  • Assessment at interview will cover Core Behaviours and Technical Competences: Communicating and Influencing; Making Effective Decisions; Suitable Systems and Systems Thinking (Supervised Practitioner); Safety Management (Supervised Practitioner).

Security and nationality

  • Successful candidates must meet security requirements; level is Security Check (SC).

Salary and benefits

  • Salary: £37,600 per annum (pro rata) plus a generous benefits package.
