Role summary

As a DevOps Engineer you provide a bridge between development, testing, network/infrastructure, operations and system administrators to facilitate efficient, continuous and high quality software delivery. The processes and tooling implemented by the DevOps Engineers enables Software Engineers to turn source code and associated artefacts into installation media and/or installed and configured environments.

You will typically combine the skills of coding or scripting and process reengineering with exemplary team working and communication skills. As a DevOps Engineer you should have a good breadth of knowledge across the disciplines of software development and how software is deployed.

You will be working in a multiple disciplined team, and require a broad range of technical and soft skills to enable the team to implement sound DevOps engineering practices and deliver value quickly and continuously.

Responsibilities and scope

  • Automation skills: Design, build and maintain automation solutions for building, testing, deploying applications and infrastructure. Specific skills include:
    • Continuous Integration - Continuous building, testing and integrating software
    • Continuous Deployment - Automating deployment of artefacts from CI
    • Orchestration - Deploy, manage, scale and network containers
    • Workload Automation - Automate scheduling and scaling of application workloads
    • Cloud Management - Design, deployment and management of Public or Private Cloud environments
    • Configuration Management - Good configuration and source code control of artefacts
  • Human skills: Strong communication within a multi-disciplined team
    • Problem Solving - Diagnose and resolve problems across infrastructure, code, networking and databases; identify root causes
    • Collaboration - Work effectively with the team to achieve common goals
    • Knowledge sharing - Share knowledge within project team and wider organisation
    • Flexibility - Adapt to new situations and technology
  • Technical skills: Broad understanding of technical domains; key skills include:
    • Cloud Platforms - Configuration of at least one Public or Private Cloud platform
    • Operating Systems - Configure, harden and maintain at least one OS
    • Programming Languages - Ability to program for automation and problem solving
    • Containerisation - Experience with at least one container platform and orchestration tool
    • Application Technologies - High-level understanding of application development tech
    • Databases - Deploy and maintain various DBMS and diagnose issues
    • Legacy Infrastructures - Understand legacy technologies when present
  • Multi-discipline enabling skills: Understanding of IT Operations, Security, Application Development & Delivery, Architecture
    • IT Operations - Manage BAU support, change and incident management, monitoring
    • Security - Secure infrastructure from design to deployment
    • Application Development & Delivery - Understand development methods and delivery
    • Architecture - Design and document architectures using best practices
  • Process & Framework Knowledge: Understanding of processes and frameworks to deliver value
    • Agile - Understand Agile Manifesto and principles; work in an Agile team
    • Scrum - Active member of the Scrum team and participate in sprint ceremonies
    • SRE - Apply SRE principles to improve reliability
